GSDtravels

by GSDtravels on 06 May 2009 - 03:05

I had a spectacular morning and then this happened.  Driving through the middle of nowhere in Oregon, I see what I believe to be a black GSD in the middle of the road!  Of course, I stopped, she ran off into the woods.  I mean, I'm 50 miles from any house, parked for 45 minutes and not a car goes by.  So, I put some kibble on the side of the road, back 50 feet down the road and she appears!  Slowly, watching, she makes her way to the food and gulps it down.  I get out of the car and call to her and she hightails it back into the woods.  I see her peeking at me and looking at the spot where I had put the food.  So, I open a can an plop it down, she watches from the safety of the bushes.  I stay put this time and she hesitantly comes to gobble it down.  She sniffs and looks, as if deciding whether I'm friend or foe, she comes close to the car.  As soon as I open the door she runs again.  I put water down and she comes out again, slowly.  She drinks and comes close to the car again.  I open the door and she runs.  I tried to call the State Police but no cell reception.  Finally, a truck comes by and a young woman, government worker, stops to see what's going on.  I tell her the story and show her the pics I took.  She checked a marker on the road and said she would have someone come out and try to catch her.  I left more food near the woods before I left, there was nothing more I could do, very, very sad.  When I had reception, I did call the Police and gave them a location, just in case.  I know some idiot threw her out of a car, there was no life within 50 miles, either direction.  Anyway, here are the pics, she's got GSD in her but is mixed with something else.

This is so sad, i do hope she gets rescued. She does look as though she has the mark of wearing a collar at some point, so you are probably right about someone dumping her. Nice try GSDtravels, you did everything you could. Liz

GSDtravels,
good to hear from you and that you are up & well.

Thanks for trying to help this poor dog, you did the right thing. On one hand I feel sorry for the poor thing that you were not able to catch her, on the other hand, who knows what you could have gotten into.

Oregon.........I remember picking up lumber up there, a breathtaking scenery. It was up there where I saw for the first time in my life a Brown Bear in the wild. So watch out, we dont want you to be eaten by one of them !! But I bet your partner would do anything to prevent this !

So long for now, stay safe and keep us posted ! Funny thing, I am always reliefed when I read something from you, so I know you two are well.
All the best.  Ulli Dresbach

Awww, such a sweet-looking girl...she's thin, for sure, but looks like she's managing to find food to eat (possibly in people's backyards? Dumpsters?).  You gave her a good meal, essential nutrients that will keep her going for longer.  Any chance you'll be heading that way again?  She looks like she's mixed with a lab--her coat is short and smooth, tail not bushy enough for a Shepherd, and those white markings on her chest and feetsies.  I'd also send an email to the local police and SPCA with these pics attached...get the word out there, someone will find her and pick her up to take her to safety.

She looked pretty young, not skin and bones but HUNGRY.  There are no back yards to raid, really in the middle of nowhere.  She did have a shiny coat and no bones showing so I'm thinking she was dumped within the past week.  No collar gave me the clue she was purposely left.  I don't know what I would've done had I caught her.  I don't know that I'd put her in the car with Drake, can't compromise him.  But, I probably would have flagged down a car and asked them to call authorities.  I will not be going back that way, unfortunately.  I just hope the coyotes don't get her before someone has a chance to save the poor thing.  She came into the road, I'm sure, asking for help, but was too terrified to come too close.  Probably abused in the past and doesn't trust anyone but also knows humans are a food source.  If anyone is in Oregon, it was on Silver Lake Road between mile markers 27 and 28, Klamath County.  I'd love to see her get a fair shake at a decent life.  It really broke my heart
