I was quite surprised this dog is posted as a white dog. Was this a shepherd? Can some bloodline people shed some light on this dog? This goes to prior Horand and beowulf

I couldn't find any info on Greif, so I don't know if he was part of Max von Stephanitz' breeding program or not..... another dog, presumably from the same source was Luchs Sparwasser - he was a full brother to Horand von Grafrath and was utilized by the Captain... this guy certainly LOOKS like a shepherd, and could have been white or light grey. It's well known that dogs of different color, coat texture, and ear carriage were used to create the modern GSD, as the Captain basically focused on three distinct regions of Germany for his sheep herding dogs, and they didn't conform to a uniform type. If anyone out there has more to say on the subject of Greif, I'd be interested to hear it also.......

During the last decade of that century, Captain von Stephanitz experimented with breeding dogs, taking the best of the shepherd dogs across the country to get the qualities he desired. Grief, a white coated shepherd dog, was one of the shepherds Max often used to generate his idea of the perfect working dog. In 1899, he attended The Karlsruhe Exhibition and bought Hektor Linkrsheim, a grandson of Grief, but Max immediately changed his name to Horand von Grafrath. Because Grief was white and Horand was line related to him, Horand carried the white gene and sired many white pups and many colored pups with the white recessive gene.
