Guys and gals, if you have ever considered doing helper work but don’t know how, you really ought to check out a USA Helper Seminar in the Mid East Region. This weekend my hubby Ben and I went to our first, at OG Buckeye near Akron, OH. It was a fantastic learning experience!

They had three excellent instructors: Jurgen Oster from Germany, Mark Scarberry (USA Teaching Helper) and Nate Harves (Apprentice Teaching Helper). These guys were super teachers! Not only did they teach “how” to do the basics, they also gave detailed explanations of “why”. I promise you Ben and I have no natural instincts for this kind of work but that didn’t matter. The guys walked us through basic techniques despite our collective ineptitude.

The best part is that all the criticism was constructive, positive, and respectful. These three guys created a good learning environment where it was OK to make mistakes and learn from them. I have no delusions about becoming a top helper, but after this seminar I have confidence that we can do a better job working with our own dogs.

Folks, if you ever thought about learning helper work… but felt too embarrassed to try… think about going to the next Helper Seminar in the Mid East Region.  These guys rock!

Nice to see some positive dog related things being mentioned here.  Nate is a good helper and a good guy.

Speaking of excellent helpers, my club.. Rising Star WDC south of Atlanta GA hosted a little workshop for our members with James Laney. We are without a helper at this time and our dogs needed some work and we have a couple of members interested in building and improving their skills which will benefit the club in the end!

James Laney is awesome..... every single dog made progress, every person came away happy and our baby helpers were invited to go up and spend some more time with James.  He is a superb teaching and training helper and extremely easy to work with. And what a picture for young dogs to see.....
We do plan to bring him back and we hope to host a USA Helper Seminr/Certification at some point .

James made it a point to thank everyone for letting him work their dog and went around to every handler to discuss the next steps for their dog.. unbelievable! It was one of the best Schutzhund training weekend I've had!!

Sounds like a nice weekend Yvette, good for you and Ben.  It is great to experience the sport from both ends of the dog,it camake a lot of stuff in protection work make a lot more sense.  You should have told me I would have let you work Boomer at the Debbie Zappia seminar.

I'm sure they liked working your dogs.  You and Ben are really having a blast, way to go.

Jim, I went to the seminar to learn the basics... Boomer would have laid me out on the field.  LOL.  Remember... safety first... especially for us newbies!

In the future, once I've learned correct technique, I would be honored to catch Boomer on a long bite to proof my skills.  But for now... Not ready for that yet!  Even I know "too much dog" when I see it.

Mark has always been one of my heros. LOL
Steve Miller does a super Helper Seminar/WDA Helper Certification too.  He's been here twice, both times awesome.

The more helpers we get in this sport the better. Our old-timers are getting... OLD! SOMEBODY is going to have to take their places before they all die off. Ha ha ha.

Yvette,

You both did a great job and I really liked your enthusiasm and your willingness to learn. You took what you heard and saw and really tried to apply it, and that was excellent.

Here's some pics of your boy having some fun.
