Yellowrose, what do you do with emus.  I mean, do you butcher them every so often?  If so, are they tasty?  Is there still a market out there for them?  Just curious.

How did you know I had Emu?

This is Ragu...I shot a  man 5 years ago trying to steal the big bugger.

size of the eggs when laid

Male emu takes over the nest and he sits on them non stop. Don't get near a nest with a male emu on it...Female doesn't do a thing but lay eggs and mate..MAle does all the rest...HE even teaches the  babies and plays with them and teaches them to eat.   Have to have rocks, grazing grass and feed, with a big hole for swimming.  Noisey birds.

Female Emu has a collar hanging down in front of more feathers than the male does.  This one is young
Emu pen is at back of this section to the right. double fenced with walking path.  triple pens etc. 5 ft cattle fencing with berry vines lining the back fence.  They eat berries, fruits, kibble food for ratite , grit in baby food.   and they love scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, potato salad, and same lettuce I give the fish.

Ivomec is used on Emu just like dogs.  They get an innoculation for a certain viral infection known to their breed.. They eat dog food but you can't feed them high protein    12% -15 is max.

Not real friendly, but do gather around you by the fence in pairs like nosey birds.

Emu eggs are eaten and scrambled is the best way to eat them.    NO there  is no market now for Emu.   I have a wealthy friend who marketed the emu and had inlets and outlets for the eggs and chicks.

It is hard to find a company who will insure them . Only one in the East Texas/central , new braunsfel area.

YR, you are truly a one-of-a-kind type of gal! Your hobbies are fascinating and unusual. I am always left in admiration at what you have accomplished, it appears to be a great life.

YR, in one of your post you mentioned that you were going to work on the pen.  Ragu looks like he may still be suffering from PTSD.  I have some fine memories from my childhood spending time at Canyon Lake and floating the horshoe in New Braunfels.  back then it was swine flu free.

a while back we bought a lot of emu from a guy north of austin (he sold the oil and some emu "sticks" something like a "slim jim" at the austin farmers' market) - i loved it, can't understand why people don't eat it.

recently our local raw pet food food coop found a producer that is selling us emu as pet food for a good price. most people's dogs love it.  our 2 females's don't care for it - our corgi flat out hates it & our pyr is "non- plussed" she will nibble a very small amount then walks away - but our 2 males will eat it - our am. bully will finish it though not too enthusiastic, but our gsd pup completely loves it.  they all seem to like to gnaw on the bones:)

Emu was all the rage about a decade ago or so, our big box market still has emu steaks from time to time.  I remember seeing ads for emu farming, & for alpacas farming, I kinda wanted to try the alpacas out, they look very sweet. I bet GSDs could herd alpacas like sheep! LOL!

What brought you to emus, YR? jh

 Yellowrose speaks!  at Utmb

Really Beetree:  I haven't even scratched the surface of the things I have had   my hands on. I bought a peach orchid back 12 yrs ago ..kept my three wheelers from our family fun, and had a ball running all over 6 plus acres and then I met the man who sold me my Zu, from Larry Filo, who started all this gsd madness. Had the best peaches in  Chandler, Tex. I had peaches the size of soft balls.  Will post some pics when I find them.

My tour of Europe was another facet of my life that taught me to appreciate the USA. Have mega pics. Trip to Hawaii and the Bahama as  a single widow was a trip and a half..
Several years as an extermporanus speaker brought me many laughs and lots of learning  points after being married for 30 years before the shoe dropped. Above is a pic of one of my lectures,on the subject of  a Lady and Her Car....done at UTMB IN Galveston, Tex.  Also a pic of a Tyler Presentation long before I moved here, standing in front of one of the Largest Rock Collections owned by George Frank, who moved from Texas City, Texas with AMOCO. Also a pic of me with his brother who was a semi pro Tennis player at a tournament in Tyler, long before I ended up here.

  Sitasmom:  Recognize the T shirt....????

I also played with the race car  card also.. 289hipro 4 on the floor, Cobra Fairlane super sport, 64 Hi Per 440 Magnum Dodge RT,  1982 Corvett  350 quadro c system, last of the cokebox style before GM took a hiatus from production.

How about a snake in the Bahamas?????    Beetree:  I also do interior decorating and make all my own flower arrangements and wall decos . Pic below is living room in my house in Whitehouse, Texas.
I raised parti colored Cockers for 15 yrs. below pic of my swimming pool in LaMarque, Tx with Duchess sitting on the table by pool.
  Duchess by pool.......
Then there is 48 yrs as manager of many High end Boutiques..Below is pic in Galveston < Tex> Womans Corner, where I managed for several years before my husband and I bought the Automotive shop  I then inherited to run when he passed away.

Grand kids. Took my daughter thru the USA Miss Universe Pageant, which was a learning lesson of all times. Beauty, money and Politics.
My daughter is the brunette with Miss Texas USA..My daughter finished 12th, two shy of the finalist to go on for Miss Texas USA. She was Miss Southeast Texas.

Then to the DOGS. Buried the gsd that was our Guard dog and met the man who got me into gsd.
If you're gonna travel with gsd and be safe you have to buy a truck to pull the trailer and the stuff....lol This pic is in Kentucky when the leaves were changing.
At Cumberland Ridge water fall with Yap and ZU

All gsd are from my breedings . I am holding Diether or trying to.

I , too, like Gsdtravels, took off after I was into the gsd about 7 yrs , and took a trip across the USA with 8 gsd in tow. That would make a whole other thread. Maybe , as I have some awesome pics of Cumberland Ridge, Kentucky, Tennesee and then on to Alabama , on to home. All this led to the Emu , and packing away my jewels, furs and glad rags to the country life of pooper scoops and odo ban and flies, fleas and fences and mowing grass.

Kallibeck:  Now you see the preview of my life. A whole lot more in the pages of my albums of pictures. I doove into the joy of life, experienced highs and lows, and good times and hard times. Never focused on the negatives and took the tiger by the tale. My husband was from Oklahoma and he always wanted to raise Black Angus, like Mahon on our board now does, by the way, and he wanted Emus.
 Emu eating potato salad
Potato salad anyone?
pic of the guy who built the emu pen and all my kennels,  birthing boxes, electical, barn repair,  keeps the trucks running and my house in full repair, nursery, and redid the septic system , fencing and does the acreage clean up when he comes home......my son.

Beetree:    I have worn so many hats I have to stop and remember.  Choir director, soloist, automotive diagnosis and owner of a repair shop, mom, wife, and Ganny to the Gang and two great Grand kids.
