Now... that was an interesting link, RS.  I'd never heard the name "ischemic" before.

Looks like you can expect a good outcome, Elle... glad for you and your dog.

My 8 1/2 year old male Malinois had an FCE (fibrocartilaginous embolism) in October 2005.  We were down in Atlanta to compete at the Malinois National Championship and I went to get him out of the crate to feed him and he was stuck, couldn't get out of the box.  I lifted him out and stood him on the ground and initially thought he had a cramp.  It affected his right rear leg only.  I ran back up to the hotel room and looked in the phone book for an emergency vet and rushed him to the closest one I could find.  There was no pain, just blockage of the blood flow through the spine.  For him, it only touched the right rear, many times it reaches multiple limbs.  He spent the night at the emergency vet and the next day we left for home.  I spent the next couple of weeks lifting his back end with a towel under his belly every time he needed to walk and doing expensive rehab 4 times a week for the next 6 months.  Luckily I had insurance on him from a previous heat stroke issue or the cost would have been much worse.  As it was, the cost ranged from $250-$400 every visit depending on which procedures were done.  He was just under 5 years old when it happened and recently turned 8 last November.  I raised him from a puppy to SchHIII, IPOIII and competed at Regionals, National Championships and even at the Malinois World Championships so I felt I owed him the effort.  This is a dog that has suffered through 2 separate bouts with heat stroke where he was hospitalized at the University of Illinois Veterinary Medical College for over a week each time, was hit by a car, has mild hip dysplasia in both hips and his right elbow, never passed his OFA and has punctate cataracts.  Adding up all of the total medical bills over the years, I have invested probably close to $60,000 but with this dog I think he earned it and I owed it to him.  But, at 8 1/2 he's still cruisin' and doesn't quit and anyone who worked him knows why I did it.  Most people would have done it differently but he gave me a lot and he definitely earned it.
