Hey Folks :)

The guys at Signature K9 are looking to put together a kit with items for starting puppies and early bite development.  We're looking to do more advanced kits later on for dogs that are more advanced as well....but are starting out initially with this idea.

We're looking for ideas of items that ya'll might use when starting your own puppies...puppy cuffs, sleevs, tugs, leashes, etc...and what ya'll would like to see in kits like that.  We wont be able to make 60 different kits to suit everyone...but at the very least we can try and come up with one or two good kits that cover what most trainers use when developing a puppy for bitework.  I'd love to hear from ya'll on the forum as far as what equipment you use...but you can also PM me or send me an email.  If I have any questions about the specific equipment you use and why you use it, I'll go ahead and send you a PM.

Look forward to hearing ya'lls ideas!!

aw, come on guys...almost 100 views and no replies yet?  I'm feeling hurt and unloved :'-(.

All we're basically looking for is what owners of young pups might be interested in buying in a package...especially for those newer owners (like I was a couple of years ago....hadn't a clue).

Thanks!

With our last litter my teen age son got the idea for tying a sqeaky toy to a fishing pole.   It was quite funny and fun both sides.   We also made tug toys out of some fleece we got from Walmart.  I took a yard of fleece, cut it in half and then cut strips about 4-5 inches wide.  I then tied a knot at one end, tightly braided it and then tied a knot at the end.  Lastly I tied a knot in the middle.  I tested many prototypes on my adult gs's, and they hold up quite well.

You can also tie rope to a fishing pole line.  I remember with one litter all 4 puppies were pulling on the braided rope at one time.  Brings new meaning puppy tug o war.

Hope this give you some ideas if nothing else.

piece of burlap on the end of a horse whip.

for a kit,  balls on strongs, ribbon/fleece on the end of strongs or fish pole type.  any balls or toys that move or vibrate.

Are these "kits" for anyone or just for training minded folks? Each would be different.

For me as a training minded person, I would want a collar for obedience, a harness for tracking and drive building (protection) exercises. You would then need a long line for tracking, a 4ft “tie out” for drive exercises & a 6ft leash for obedience. Then a rag tug, a ball tug, a puppy bite pillow & stick & of course a Kong. Maybe a small sample of treats that could be found in the local area with little difficulty unless you are going to supply them for sale. I use a “clicker” so I would want at least one of those and a “guide” to the first couple of weeks with my new puppy. Teaching focus, the recall (come), leave it, crate & house training and the such….that’s all I can think of right off.

Ball on a string,  leather on a whip, good small treats,  harness or wide collar, tie out, and clicker and guide as k9sar said.  A good DVD about building drive would be really good, too.

I have a variety of toys, but I use the leather on the whip the most and next the ball on a string.  I also use a soft  tug toy, actually a stuffed sock, especially when the puppy is teething.   You could include a kong or a nylabone as some dogs do need to chew.

I think these kits would probably be oriented towards the training minded folks...I think the first one we are looking at making is probably going to be oriented towards patrol / protection type dogs in terms of building drive and bitework.  Stuff we might look at more of in the future are Narc/Bomb/SAR puppy raising kits and the like.

Thanks for the great suggestions guys!  Keep them coming...it's really kind of neat to hear about things I WISH I had thought about when I got started with my two sherms!

Everything everyone said is right with how people build up the puppy's drive. The only thing that I would do a little different and this is of course depending on the age of the puppy is use a shami {sp} like the one you use to dry your car off. Again it also depends on the age b/c anything else that is used can catch their teeth and rip them out accidentally. With the Shami that won't happen and it does help the puppy try to grip harder to hang on b/c it it kind of slippery to them. You also might want to check out Kraftwerk kennels website b/c I believe they sell their kits there as well. This might also help you out on what to put in your kits.
