The United States has seen its first death from the swine flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A 23-month-old child in Texas has died from the ailment, the Georgia-based agency reports. The flu death was confirmed Wednesday by Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, during an interview with CNN. Besser gave no other details about the child.

Meantime, the number of confirmed cases of swine flu in the USA rose to 64 on Tuesday as additional schools in New York City reported suspected outbreaks and U.S. public health officials warned the disease would continue to spread nationwide.

Nearly a week after the threat of a pandemic emerged in Mexico, that country remained the hardest hit, with   more than 150 killed and 2,400 people sickened. Cases have also been confirmed in Canada, New Zealand, Israel, Britain, Spain and Germany.

They confirmed cases in CT as well, and the people who are sick just came back from vacation in Cancun.

When SARS hit, it was contained because the countries involved were very proactive.

With this one, a vast portion of a small city became ill and the health officials didn't even bat an eye. Instead they turned their heads and pretended it was nothing. Now its too late for containment. GEE another reason to close our borders with Mexico - not the illegal immigration isn't reason enough.

I don't think it will be as bad as all the hype - or the death toll would already be much higher already.......Just another nasty flu bug that will take its toll, mainly from the very young, very old and people with compromised immune systems.

Mexican travel industry is going to take a bit hit. I think they need a few months to work with creating a preventative shot. When one says "bad" that is where the fear or hype comes in. Over 6 billion in  population together with ease of transmission of a disease we don't quite have a handle on, if the percentages of past biological catastrophes were to be applied, just think of it. Half the people you know could be gone! And this would be the ultimate social equalizer; money or power just won't matter to a killer virus.

yeah, a preventative shot, just like last time right?  25 deaths from the shot, thousands others crippled from Guillan Barre syndrome, from the shot and one swine flu death.  You take the shot when they get one developed, and you can have my dose too.

The child that died in Mexico, "just arrived" with his/her parents. In other words, another illegal!

Keep in mind those vaccines or shots take 6 months to get them out, they have to be tested first......and like the other person said, 25 deaths on that other preventative shot. No thanks.

Lets all just stay home for a week.......lol
I wouldn't take the shots either.

So far 2,000 confirmed cases and 150 deaths - that is not 1/2% of the population, its closer to 1/16th isn't it?

I sure wish these things would go after only thieves and scoundrals and not just everybody.....Oh well, the'll have to manufacture a better virus for that......

Maybe this is the United Nation's way of creating a Utopia on earth..........less people to share what is already available to us.........

Hey I've heard so many different conspiricies.........its difficult to keep up with all of them.
