I recently got an adult dog who was from an M litter and his registered name is M von (kennel name). I have no desire to change his kennel name (or his call name for that matter) but I want him to have a real name, not just "M." I have not sent off the transfer paper yet. Is there anything I can do? This boy needs a name.
Thanks,
Nichole

It is my understading that "As long as your dog has not sired any litters, "AKC WILL allow a name change. Now I'm not sure about the kennel name, even though you are going to keep the kennel name attached(which I don't think you really have much choice on that end, as well you shouldn't).
I think most dogs are NOT called by their registered names.

AKC will allow a name change as kitkat stated, but there are conditions. Are you sending off an application for permanent AKC Registration Certificate or an actual Registration for transfer into your name. The reason I ask is that I had a boy brought back to me for re homing a year ago. I had sent his purchaser the application for AKC registration because I had not registered the entire litter to me. I had filled out his name on the application but the purchaser changed it completely, omitting my kennel name all together. When I contacted AKC they told me that whom ever registers the puppy/dog is the only one who can change the name.

When I got my female, they had already filled in her name. problem was that I already had a female with the same name. I contacted the akc and they told me to just cross out the name and put in the new one. Had no problem at all with the akc or the breeder as I kept their kennel name.
Easy enough to change the name through the akc. Talk to the breeder. I cant see it being a problem as long as the name begins with an "m" and the kennel name kept on it.
