First, let me clarify that I am not a breeder. During the last few days on this board I witnessed something that was not unprecedented, but truly distasteful none the less.

A person named Danny Salaaf essentially extorted a breeder named Judy Dominguez of Arizona Black Shepherd to get his deposit back. His implicit threat was that he would create a public spectacle because he had buyer's remorse.

There's a right way to handle that, and a wrong way. Danny Salaaf chose the latter. I don't know Judy Dominguez, but I do know that if I was a breeder I'd never sell him a dog. I wouldn't give him the time of day.

So that breeders can identify the Dannys of the world, on German Shepherd Consumer Reports I created a private breeders-only forum.

Breeders and their dogs deserve protection from unfit buyers, those that are quick to publicy trash a breeder's reputation, fail to make payments, are unrealistic in their expectations, waste a breeder's time with no good-faith intention to purchase, have jeopardized the health of a dog, or generally, have created a bad situation where one did not exist before.

Cick here to read my thinking on the subject.

OK let me get this straight....you are not a breeder but you are starting a forum for breeders only?  Interesting.  Are you allowed to read the posts?  .

by GSCR on 24 April 2009 - 21:04

As board admin of course I can view the posts. I also administrate a forum for pediatric oncologists but am not one myself so I'm not sure it there's a point to your question. I routinely view the posts there and am certain no one finds it "interesting".

Ocoe, you're welcome to take a look at the site. You'll see the purpose of the forum is clearly articulated and the polices are straightforward.

Advice:
You and you're group (if ever formed) might want to consult with a lawyer who specializes in defending business groups from anti-trust prosecution.

My guess is that even this original post has a stated goal that is actionable - and possibly de facto illegal.

Trafagar, thanks for the advice. The entire site has been reviewed by legal counsel. Anti-trust would not apply, the site does not promote agreements or practices to restrict free trade.

GSCR DO YOU EVEN OWN A GERMAN SHEPERD? Your not a breeder but have a breeders forum?? Your not a judge but feel you have some authority to slander people on your website as you deem Danny distasteful ??? Grow up! Maybe someone will take the time to sue you when you misuse your new website and teach you a valuable lesson!! Trouble maker forums like yours are not needed, crooks eventually cant outrun the long arm of the law........Matt Dillen

Gunsmoke, thanks for your observations and forgive me for saying this, but I think you miss the entire point of the German Shepherd Consumer Reports website.
Yes, you do have to register with your complete first and last name, and it does ask for you location. It also tells you that it displays IP addresses. That's the whole point - to prevent anonymous bashing with unsubstantiated claims as we see all too often on Internet boards.
Here's a couple specific cases from the site:
A reputable breeder was sold an imported breeding female with reproductive issues known from the seller's prior attempts to breed her. Additionally, after two years the seller has still not produced the SV registration.
In this case the buyer states the facts of the case and signs her name. She provides contact information for anyone with additional questions, or for anyone having been similarly defrauded.
In a second case an individual makes accusations against a kennel in Michigan. He provides no specifics, and makes a number of untrue allegations citing complaints filed wth the Minnesota Better Business Bureau while in fact there are no complaints on record. He also provides a location that is contradicted by his IP address.
In this case the kennel name was redacted, and the poster was permanently banned.
In a third case a buyer obtains a puppy from a North Carolina breeder. The buyer reports the dog is in great health, exactly what he wanted, the kennel conditions were clean, and the breeder courteous and professional. The buyer provides photo and contact information for anyone wanting further information.

In this case a buyer that satisfied her customer receives positve recognition.

These are each informational to a portion of the German Shepherd community.

Matt, you state the premise that "eventually crooks
are caught by the long arm of the law". Unfortunately few if any jurisdictions have the resources to address the problem so that is simply not true.

Even if it were, "eventually" can be a long time - how many sick animals have to die, or how many fraudulent transactions have to occur before you think people should be warned?

Danny is not mentioned anywhere on my website so you should probably get your facts straight.

Sorry, I failed to mention that I have owned German Shepherds for 32 years and currently have a great DDR female.

I've worked with a number of breeders over three decades and like most of you have had experiences both good and bad. But the forum is not about me. I'm merely using my technical abilities to promote a responsible dialogue.
