Mum of Zoe

by Mum of Zoe on 23 April 2009 - 02:04

We take our girl into work with us everyday, and she's got a 10'x12' pen area with her bed and toys etc inside the building. If we have time, while taking her out to do her business, we'll play some games with her. Sometimes we work on obedience, other times we just throw that ball as hard as we can so she can run her heart out and get her blood going.

Today on one such occasion, she and I were standing under an oak tree that had dead leaves everywhere (piled a foot deep in some places) and over the blacktop of the parking lot. I threw the tennis ball when Zoe was turned towards me, and she went after it so fast that her hind end slid out from under her because of the leaves, and WHAM! she hit the pavement. Oh did she yelp! She hasn't yelped like that since she overextended her foreleg tendon at 4 months from running around like a crazy puppy!. Tail tucked between her legs, she came towards me with her ears back, howling, as I crouched down to bring her near and see if she was really hurt. Anyone in the area would've thought I was killing her, by the noise she was making!

After a few minutes of calm petting in her favorite spot (her chest), talking to her in a soothing voice, and gently running my hands all over her to see if she reacted in pain to a particular spot (which she didn't, not so much as batting an eyelash), she calmed down and was totally over it. She was feeling better enough to let me give her a belly rub (her favorite!), and trot alongside me as we went back inside.

The whole episode just reminded me of little kids, how they hurt themselves (like get their fingers pinched or get a scratch), freak out about it with the whole screaming and crying bit, and once they realize that, hey, it really doesn't hurt! They're totally over it like nothing happened.

Crazy dogs, lol.

Part of why they're so dear to us, especially when they're big goofballs! jh

When my boys were very young, and they fell down or something, I would check the time it took from the time they fell until the time they screamed and started to cry. The longer the time the more it hurt.........

Once my son, while learning to walk tripped and hit his head on the corner of a piece of woden furnature......I counted to 5 before he let out the first scream. That one really hurt..........for the next 10 days he had the most impressive bruise right down the middle of his forehead. People would look at him and then scowel at me........a cop stopped to "talk" to us and in an akward jerk, moved his hand right past the boy's face. He didn't flintch, do the cop ended the conversation quickly.........grrrrrrrrr

Dogs and babies are great, only babies become teenage know it all's, and when they finaly become decent again, the move out and go to college........gotta love them both
