I know that wild game is commonly fed but what about bear? I have freinds that can get bear meat for me but am I looking for trouble with this?
I have read that Trichinella is fairly common in bear meat and it may not be killed by freezing. I found a research paper that said that Trichinells nativa (different from the form that was connon at one time in raw pork) may survive over 6 months in the freezer. Cooking would kill it but does that defeat the purpose of feding raw?

This says 20 days at -15 degrees or colder will kill it, but other say not.

Interesting problem. Never had the opportunity to feed bear meat. Might be coming up though, as Oklahoma just declared a bear season.

I feed all kinds of meat, but would be very cautious of raw bear. I believe that usda considers DEEP freezing for a minimum number of hours or days depending upon the size of cut to be adequate for pork, but the risk is far greater for bear, and I would definitely cook it thoroughly. You could make a nice stew by braising for several hours. I am sure they will appreciate your culinary efforts. Jonah

DO NOT FEED RAW!!! WE HAVE REGULAR BEAR SEASON HERE IN MONTANA AND IT IS DANGEROUS, BECAUSE OF THE TRICHINOSIS...COOKED ONLY...!!!
