I have been using hot dogs as a training tool for years. I recently was told by a friend that his vet said that hot dogs were bad for a dog and that he should use carrots. What do you all think? Thanks for your input.

that vet is crazy.
Carrots, carrots, what does he think, does this vet know the difference between a dog and a rabbit?
dogs cannot digest raw carrots and end up with lots of gas

My dog would laugh at me. Seriously, I don't use hotdogs as bait much, I prefer to make my own tracking bait, but in a pinch I use hotdogs I just look for the ones that are nitrite free.

Just smile and wave at the vet!

The dogs love the hot dogs but I hate the sodium and nitrates. [in all fairness my human kids did not get them either very often and I buy maybe a pack a year]
I would buy beef heart and boil it to where I could cut it into peices [it is very tough] and microwave it the rest of the way. I know the dogs would eat it raw, but ick in the pockets. Oh also deer heart which I could get for free but it is a lot smaller.
It is a smelly venture but a great dog treat - very gamey - the dogs love it.

You know I was just driving past a farm last summer and happened to see a whole herd of dogs grazing in a corn field it was beautiful.

I used hot dog's for years until I had a female that didn't like them. I used satin ball's for her. Yes I agree, just smile at the vet and wave :-) You have to remember some vets don't know it all, either though they want to think they do.

I have used raw carrots for my girl...she LOVES them! I buy the baby carrots and just bite off little pieces as we work. She knows where I keep them in the refridgerator and is at the door whenever she hears the crisper drawer. She doesn't suffer from gas but I do notice the carrots in her stools so I don't give her too many. So if your dog likes them go ahead and use them sparingly.
