Yeah, right! Got an intact male & 3 females, & my boy is infatuated with 1 of my girls, whether she is in heat or not. This has necessitated crating, because I will not have an 'Oops!' litter! Thats all I can suggest, I crate him in an extra large metal crate( the great dane size) so he can stretch out, but we had to reinforce the corners of the crate with metal D clamps, because he can easily spring the latches on the crate when he wants to. And we make sure that he gets LOTS of excersize, so that he is good & tired when he does have to be put in the crate. He likes it, it's his personal space, he runs right in when it's bedtime....but I don't trust him for a minute without those D clamps! And a kennel? He's like Wiley Coyote, he'd be out of that in a flash... he can jump & climb very well! Oh, & we put a plywood floor in the bottom of the crate, & then added rubber kennel flooring, to prevent calluses,(he tried to dig his way out when the little bitch was in heat...). He has a bed in there, & he has his own room in the house, which he shares with my older female, whom he doesn't bother with, for some reason. She has her own crate, partitioned away from him, just in case. Sound extreme? It's not really! The most useful thing has been to increase his activity, & keep him engaged so he's not bored. He has a schedule, & we adher to it as closely as possible! I try to keep him so busy he doesn't have time to pine over his 'girl'! LOL!
And as for your girl, a trip to the vets might help determine if she's receptive. Try scratching her rump right above the tail, does she lift her tail & sort of tip it over to the side? That's called flagging, & it mean she's willing, & generally speaking, they're only willing when they're able! My first female had silent heats, she was so clean & tidy that it was difficult to tell when she was in heat, until her vulva was very swollen. And they can be very receptive, ( and the most fertile) toward the end of their heat cycle, after most of the swelling goes away....long after the bleeding has stopped. I have just recently heard of a pregnancy test for dogs....don't know if it's in use yet, testing, or just a rumor.....in my experience, there is no test that confirms pregnancy in dogs, but your vet may be able give you a better idea of what stage of your dog's cycle she's in. I'd watch her very closely. Is she breed worthy? Or were you thinking of spaying her? If this is going to be a continuing problem, that might be the best answer. Good luck! jackie harris
