Would you consider this to be too close?

Linebreeding - 5 generations

This is not a GSD breeding.  But a Doberman breeding.  I just didn't know who to ask........ I was considering a puppy from this litter, and just now really got to looking at the pedigree.  Both are top dogs.  Please give me your advice..

I have a friend that was previously a well known breeder of Dobermans I will email her the post and see if she can offer an opinion.

A lot depends on the quality of the dogs. Have the parents been DNA tested for von willebrands disease? 60% of the breed are affected. Have they been tested for cardiac problems, eye problems? Really do your homework. Dobes tend to have a high incidence of health problems. What about hip and elbow certification? What is the longevity of the dogs in the pedigree?

I was looking at importing Dobermans as a second breed until I started doing the research. Also, consider where you live. If you have cold winters, then you will be needing hats and coats for the dog. (no joke, the ears get frostbitten quite easily).

Linebreeding can be a good thing if the breeders have chosen quality dogs and have tested their breeding stock. Can't tell anything from the information given. You really want to examine the dogs in the first 3 generations. That will give you a better idea of what traits have been passed forward. If none of the above tests have been done on the first 3 generations, I would run.

Yes, they have been Vwd tested and are clear, female is OFA Hips good, stud is Penn Hip very good, both thyroid normal, both Holter cardiac normal.  Neither were tested for eyes though.  Longevity is good and long on both sides.  Both are AKC Champions and the female is actually in the Top 20 and flawless.  The stud finished at 9 months of age.

Although I'm wanting to title in AKC obedience, rally, tracking, and agility and also work this dog in Search and Rescue.  Wondering if the American Dobes are similar to the American GSD showlines...no or little drive or good working partners.

There's another litter that both are AKC CH. but the mother has working titles behind her and is very diverse and drivey.  Not near as gorgeous as the first female but I KNOW has the drives and working temperment I'm wanting.  She's health tested on everything.  And yes I'm wanting to get involved in AKC Conformation otherwise I'd look into getting a Euro dobe.

Yes, I know the Dobies are known for health problems.  I have a 6 year old that I bought out of the newspaper from a backyard breeder without knowing any better and he has every health problem imaginable.  We've sunk thousands into his issues, and he's actually getting gold beads implanted into his neck next month to treat his Wobbler's Disease.  With his health problems aside he is without a doubt an awesome dog.  I just didn't do my homework and purchase from a reputable breeder who actually cares about their dogs.

I would have posted on the Doberman Database but they aren't nearly as active in chatting and posting as the GSD database is. =)

I'm more familiar with the European lines. A friend of mine has tried showing them in Canada and finds that what the North American judges put up is the North American type. From what I have seen so far is a difference in drive and size/bone density. The American lines looked finer boned.  The same female that got dumped at the north american style show won best in show at a euro style show. Go figure.

It's great that the testing was done.  Really check out the dogs in the first 3 generations. They will have more influence on future generations if you are looking at breeding. Also check out past litters if that is possible.

The Doberman Review is also a great place to do research.

Good luck

In our working dog club we have two American dobe breeders that train with their champions....the dobe show people have done the same thing that the American shepherd have done....we have a dobe working breeder also and their dogs are night and day difference in temperament.
