Drake has had an on and off issue with his ear for the last couple of weeks.  He's been holding it down sometimes, shaking his head and it seems okay after about a minute.  It's come and gone but hasn't been constant and he was at my cousin's vet in Florida for his shots and check-up.  She cleaned his ears and didn't see a problem.  I've been keeping them clean and haven't seen anything unusual.  Today he is holding his ear down, shaking his head and scratching gingerly with his paw.  It hasn't let up and I'm wondering if he was coincidentally stung by an insect or maybe does have an issue that's worsening?  I'd really like to have him seen but don't know vets in the area.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, not from your area.  Is the ear red?  Will he let you massage it and search for signs of a bug bite/sting?  Is there any odor (ear mites stink)?  Can you feel any heat in the ear?  Our old girl used to fuss with her ear occassionally, held it down, shook her head and moaned while she scratched at it then smelled her foot when she stopped.  I would check it but couldn't find anything either.  She did like a massage at the base so whatever it was it must have been deep.  Since she only did this occassionally and did not fixate on it we lived with it.  It could be ear wax and I'm sure there is a solution you can pour in there to help but I can't think of the name.  Just be sure to do it outside if you go that route...it gets messy.
Good luck
Deb

Thanks for the advice DebiSue.  There is no odor, no redness.  I have massaged around the base of his ear and he does let me, seems to make it feel better.  I have felt for a lump but have found nothing, so if he was bitten it's deeper into the ear canal.  I'm not getting much wax and his ears are clean to where I can see with a light, so if it is wax it must be pretty deep.  He seems to have gotten over it for now but I think I'd still like to have him seen, just to be on the safe side.  So, anybody out there in this area, a referral would be appreciated, thanks.

Hey girl,,yes , but he is in Galveston : 2108 61st ,  Galveston Veterinary Clinic   ask to see Dr. RIchard  Henderson,

Tell the recerptionist you are /Jan's company from out of town..Need to see Doc Henderson today or tomorrow  asap  ..I will call therm if you like and tell them to work you in last appt for doc..I will pm you or you can call me..

you just go to galveston to see the beach. He probably got lots of water in his ears from Florida beach..and they are wet inside....drop a couple of drops of alcohol per my vet heres advice...or go to Walmart and buy a bottle of   swimmers ear...treat for three or four days...he has wet ears.   After you cross the causeway,. watch for  61st exit to the right   exit go to
61st. and turn right   go down past 2 red lights and Galveston Animal clinic is on left in a tiny business strip about 2 blocks past  a chinese restuarant.

alcohol will not harm the ear as you only put three drops   rub and let him shake it out..it will release the water.  and dry.

Don't anyone state that that is dangerous...my vet here in Tyler does know what he is talking about...A dog that has been beaching for several times in FLorida, no doubt has wet ears.

If you want pm me and I will give you Docs number...   edit:     409  744 5355

I agree with YR about the alcohol.  Don't waste your money on the swimmer's ear drops though, basically alcohol and my own human doctor gave me that advice.  Didn't think about him maybe having swimmers ear.

Good luck

the best vet I know is in Houston, Dr.  White at Briarcrest Vet. Clinic.

He takes his time, really looks for answers and then gives you his opinion is a language that is not "doctor-eze".

His prices are decent too.

Also , put Drake outside in the sun today..Vitamin D from the sun and the warmth after you put the alcohol in three times today will help dry it all up...I know, pain in the ))))))))))))))..You can sun bathe in sunny Texas sun and go with a sunburn.<
lol

Tilt Drakes head back when you put the drops of Alcohol in so they go deep and let the water out...he will shake the rest out...lol

for sure...stand back and do it outside.

Thanks, I will take that advice, I have alcohol in my 1st aid kit.  He's going to be out quite a bit today, 6 ft. privacy fence all the way around.  I'll try those things first and go to the vet tomorrow if necessary.  I appreciate the referrals and will call one if I need to take him.
