Archangel

I am new to GSs but really admire them.  I have a rather strange question.

Why do some GSs barks sound so deep and others sound so high pitched.  Is this a difference in German, American, etc, etc

Thanks,
Archangel

I can't say that it is lines at all.  However I can say that I have had 2 females with way deeper barks than any male I have ever owned.  I as well have had a female and a male that had the highest shrill of a bark, you just would cringe to hear them.  I think its like people, everyone has their own voice.

K9 Dreams.
That makes sense.  I guess the age would be a factor as well.

I guess I am asking this because I have been looking at some web sites that have videos of excellant looking dogs.  Their pedigrees have allot of VAs , SGs, and what have you so they should be good lines but on the videos, some of those dogs sound terrible with that high pitched bark.

A few have that deep rough bark I am use to hearing.  A bark that sounds more aggressive.  Oh course, maybe I don't know what I am talking about.

My girl has had a very deep bark from 6 months old!  I've noticed that too, that the male GSD's barks are a little more high-pitched and "squealy" than most bitches'.  She definitely sounds bigger than her lean 60 lbs!

We love it, by the way--makes for a very effective deterrent :D

I'm assuming by video you mean the dogs are working in protection work in which case if they are worked in prey, then the barks tend to be  higher a sort of 'gimmie, gimmie, I want it!!' vs if the dog is being worked in defense where they are looking for a more aggressive profile.

my dog angus has a higher pitched bark for certain things: breakfast, waking up my great niece, anxious to go for a ride, dinner. his DEEP bark is for "enemies" on the other side of the wall (i.e. people taking a walk). along with our female shepherd, claire, the deep barks are also to warn the darn mailman away from the doorway! poor mailmen.....

My nieghbors GS is a German Showline.  Very large and maybe too large.  His barks are all hi pitched and annoying.  Even when the Mailman comes around.  high pitched and annoying.  I had a young male American Show and his bark was always deep and got your attention.

Not trying to say American is better or anything like that because they are not.  American lines are too weak.  They are over angulated.  I think that is the right word.

My working line male has such a deep chest.........I realize the bark comes from the throat area initially,  but backed up by such a gigantic body cavity,  it is the deepest most sincere bark I have ever owned.  He is generally around 85 lbs.

Traveling at different times of the day, solicitors, or the evening coyotes, I enjoy taking him outside, asking him to "Giblaut", just a couple of times.................message recieved!       Trish  :)

Both of my males have highpitched wussy barks when they are playing, want something, are told to speak, etc. But when its time to be serious they'll shake the house/car etc. Very deep and big barks. My female just always has a big, deep bark. My female Mal shrieks (high-pitched and very annoying! lol)
