The puppy mills are the producers of dogs that eventually get euthanized, because stupid people buy from them!
What about these so called 'designer' dogs? What's with that? Buy a poodle or lab NOT a labadoodle....these people are nuts too. ANY extreme is dangerous!
There some people out there that still want PURE BRED dogs. I am all for rescueing a dog and usually try to sway people in that direction, but quit looking down your nose at people who want pure bred dogs.
Now I feel better.

as far as the doodle breeds, I am not one to care for mixing breeds, but the labradoodles were intended to be guide dogs for people with severe allergies, first breedings were done by guide dog foundations. it was hoped after several generations that the dogs would have more of the poodle type hair.
it was the unscrupulous breeders out to make a quick buck that started all this doodle mess. and have blown these mixes way out of purportion just for $. I mean come on, a $2500 mix breed is ridiculous

The Original Poster asked:
"Why doesn't PETA spend as much time trying to shut down the puppy mills & pet stores instead of worrying about decent breeders?"
Because PETA does not believe there is such a thing as a responsible breeder. As far as PETA is concerned, there are no good breeders. Here is what PETA has to say regarding responsible breeders:
http://www.peta.org/campaigns/ar-responsiblebreeders.asp"Producing more animals—either to make money or to obtain a certain "look" or characteristic—is also harmful to the animals who are produced by breeding. Dogs and cats don't care whether their physical appearance conforms to a judge's standards, yet they are the ones who suffer the consequences of humans' manipulation."
If you spend maybe 2 minutes perusing the PETA website, you will discover PETA is actually 100% against ALL animals kept by man. They see no difference between a cat or dog rescued from a shelter and kept as a companion and a pig in a factory farm. PETA feels both are examples of animal exploitation. Of course PETA is a fucking slimeball hypocrite lowlife liar because they know damn well if they talk too much about their true goals, NOBODY will support them, so they lie and say they support those who adapt dogs and cats from shelters.
Here is PETA's stand on all "pets":
http://www.peta.org/campaigns/ar-petaonpets.asp "we believe that it would have been in the animals' best interests if the institution of "pet keeping"—i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as "pets"—never existed. The international pastime of domesticating animals has created an overpopulation crisis; as a result, millions of unwanted animals are destroyed every year as "surplus." This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering, which results from manipulating their breeding, selling or giving them away casually, and depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. Their lives are restricted to human homes where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to."
The celebrity idiots who jump on the PETA bandwagon and can't wait to be PETA spokespeople because they want to get a billboard don't bother to actually scratch the surface of the organization they champion. I guess that wouldn't be glamours so they don't bother. They sure do look like idiots petting their dogs and cats while at the same time talking about how they support PETA and all the good works it does. Morons.

They are not ignorant masses - sorry. They are more educated than most folks, and probably more educated than the average dog owner. I have a Ph.D. and I once gave money to PETA. They're like a lot of people -- sure of themselves, righteous about it, and while they begin somewhere very good they end up somewhere not so good.
I no longer give because I cannot get answers to questions I care about. Their extremism is misguided and counterproductive -- and hurts individual animals they claim to care about. But if you go onto a PETA forum you will see that it looks alot like our gsd forum. Someone introduces a topic, a few people make decent clarifications, and soon everyone is singing the party song and wringing their hands. It's just that it's a different song and different hands.
For the record, I think Biden and Obama should get to have whatever dog they want.

Nope, PETA is trendy, is supported by celebrities and has some catchy ad campaigns. Unfortunately too many people see any one of those reasons as more than good enough and all the proof they need to jump up and also support PETA because it makes them feel good. This pretty much also explains why most everyone of those happy people are utterly shocked to find out PETA believes owning companion animals is akin to slavery. Yep, ignorant pretty much sums up people who support an organization but don't bother to find out what exactly the organizations goals are and mission statement is.
Obviously special interest forums are populated by like minded people. As far as singing the party song and hand wringing, I don't see it, so I'll leave that to you.

PETA's mission is to eliminate (read: LIBERATE) domesticated animals. They scream about people getting purebred dogs instead of shelter dogs, but in reality, they would like to see all domesticated animals, even bugs and birds, dead, so that they are no longer enslaved by humans. They also believe that if you need companionship, you should seek it with your own kind. Leave the animals alone, they say.
I raise chickens for eggs, and the occasional chicken dinner, as well as an occasional hog or steer, and we hunt every fall. While the ARs may consider this to be murder, the simple fact is that it is life. It's called a food chain, and it happens in nature. There is nothing ignorant, or uneducated, about raising animals for food, or about getting a dog, or cat from a breeder. I hate to see that many getting put down every year, but millions of human babies are put down (aborted) every year, and I don't see nearly as many articles about their plight, nor do I see pressure on politicians to adopt these unwanted babies that haven't been born yet, or to dump millions of dollars into shelters and homes for them so they don't have to be killed. Human rights vs animal rights...Hot topic.
The simple fact is that the majority of the dogs in shelters are mixed breeds that were created not by breeders, but by irresponsible people who have let their unaltered dogs roam, and reproduce. The majority of purebred dogs in shelters are picked up by breed-specific rescues, and rehomed that way. Yes, I know some are euthanized, even with breed rescues. Some mixed breeds are those "designer" dogs, bred intentionally, but that's capitalism in action. Anyone crazy enough to pay top dollar for a labradoodle, or a pugapoo, well...I guess it's their choice, but it's nuts to me.
One last thought...If PETA and its parrots had their way and did away with all domestic animals, who's to say that some radical "plant rights" bunch wouldn't pop up and demand that plants be freed of their bonds, freed from dying for human consumption?
