I am aware that this subject has been done to death but.

I have a 5 year old bitch that had a litter of 2 puppies 12 months ago and this was her first litter. She was boarded by the owner of the stud and on arrival on day 11 of her heat she was taken to the vet and progesterone tested    result next day was 1ng.

Retested day 14 result was 11ng

Retested day 16 result was 30ng

As results take 24hrs she was mated on day 17.

From this single mating she produced 2 puppies. From what I believe she should have been put to the stud after the 11ng result, yes even if she been mated on that day I realise the result would probably been the same as that may have been all of the eggs released.

As she is almost 5 years old she may only have one more litter so I would like to maximise her chances of a litter this time so what progesterone result would YOU recommend for a mating, the owner of the stud that I am using this time says > than 20ng ? Testing for me is not an issue I will do it every day if I have to do that.

Thank you for any help.

Nothing more accurate than an experienced stud dog. He knows when.

Yes Kandi I agree with you.
I do have a male in my yard, he has never had a stud and because he is related to my bitches he probably won't, not only that but I have 3 bitches on heat at the moment and only one will be bred, my boy might be a little confused and unreliable and as for the mating for my bitch the stud is about 3 hours each way and I would prefer to only do it once and that is why I am asking the question.
I do not want to leave my bitch at the kennel either.

Once is not enough to be sure no matter what the result of a test is.

First breeding and skip day and do it the second day.

If it isn't worth the drive don't do it..That is why you only got 2 pups also.

I do three times most always.
The times I just did once, I got NONE>>>

The reason she only had 2 puppies last litter was the fault of the stud owner who was BOARDING her, left her until it was almost too late, hence the reason for my post. READ MY FIRST POST.

The stud owner did not even put the dogs together until one day after her progersterone was 30ng., which is unbelievable when the bitch was there on her property.

Not everyone has the availability of a reliable at home stud dog as some of you have.

Nowhere did I state that I was not prepared to to travel more than once I said PREFERED NOT TO  and I have on two occasions prog tested bitches until 10ng then mated them once only and had litters of 7 and 9 puppies each time (I don't need any more than 7 puppies in a litter )but this bitch 2 years ago was sent to another stud and the stud owner left her too long also and when she prog tested her she was already at 40ng. too late they had missed her.

Please I am not stupid, I just want to take control this time so give me a break please.

I brought my Labrador Retriever to the vets and did a progesterone test, and they said any reading above 2.5
was good for breeding, and Claire had a 4.01
They said breed her now, so I did, that was 2 days after they took her blood for the test, I bred her one day on what
I thought was day 11, and then again on what I was guessing was day 13, she is due May 18th,
I actually have a very good feeling about how things went, now I'll have to wait & see

She was hard to fiqure out........

Having travelled the road of Hard Knocks, I can say it you should have a discussion and definitely a paper contract with all outstide stud matings.Once  I sent up a female who had a 100% successful production record to a breeder. The dog's history was she would easily stand and flag and then concieve. This breeder told me she "had allot of dogs to mate" and my female was difficult. After  one forced AI (with muzzle on the poor thing), the female was  determined to be 'out of heat'... well the day I arrived to take her home another dog at the kennel jumped fence and mated her. The stud owner covered her with the correct stud the same day and sent home with me, the stud owner refused to keep the my female for any longer.. My female flagged and stood here at my house for FIVE days after we returned home. The stud owner said "that is common".

The dog was not pregnant.

!

Please have a discussion with the stud owner about expectations BEFORE you send the female.
