It’s a short summary of the TV program "Shepherd Dog, nursing case?!"
A quick translation:
"The authors of the „betrifft*”-program aired 25.03.09 on SWR (one of the most important television networks in Germany) have targeted the German Shepherd Dog, its breeders, the breeding Kennel Club (SV), its officials and the breeding judges.
(* = “betrifft“ means more or less „concerning“ or „with regard to“, it is then followed by any particular theme)
First of all the health problems of this breed were laid out - to the critical spectator it might just have been obvious that the GSD was selected exemplarily. The reason for that is that the Shepherd Dog is outnumbering any other dog breed held in Germany and therefore will demonstrate very clearly where it leads to, if in breeding one places special emphasis on beauty ideals.
Along with that however, one also referred to other grievances. The former characteristics defining a GSD such as drive, resilience and self-assurance (poise) have faded out into the background so that as a service dog for the police, the customs and the federal border guards, he has left the field to other dog breeds, such as the Belgian Shepherd Dog (Malinois), considered to have more drive and resilience and be more healthy altogether....

@ David: Hello David, always nice to witness your efforts to strive for a healthier GSD and a correct standard. Would you please explain the sentence: "The jury is out regarding the RSV". English not being my mother tongue, the meaning of it escapes my mind totally. Would be nice if you would elaborate just a little so I can understand what you are saying. Thanks in advance! And good luck this season!

This is really important. There has to be some truth in it. Super dogs come and go - and change radically when new godfathers enter ......

Thank you for bringing the video documentary to everybody's attention. Basically, everything they have said in the docementary is correct, just a bit exaggerated, to dramatize the message. Our beloved breed of dogs is going through problems very similar to another breed which becomes popular very quickly. Because of the demand brought in by the popularity, the german shepherd breeding has become cottage industry and irresponsible, and inexperienced people have started breeding dogs indiscrimately to supplement their income. The breeding trends are dictated by the popularity as opposed to the breed values. Different groups of people are pulling the breed apart by breeding them for specific traits as opposed to the essence of the german shepherd dog. A balanced dog is becoming extinct because we want bigger heads, larger bone, darker pigment, and more effortless gait in the show shepherd without any regard for the speed, quickness, stamina, jaw strength, natural energy, leaping ability, courage, strong nerves, and fighting instinct. We want to hide the health problems, and take care of deficiencies by medical procedures because there is a lot of money at stake. The typical "working dog" breeder is not much better. The dogs rarely acknowledge any stress. The aggression is over possession of the object as opposed to the stress put in by the stick hits or any other threats. There is hardly any scenting ability required to solve the track because everything is so visible. We have started breeding dogs who have anatomy to bite full because there is so much of emphasis placed on full bites as opposed to hard bits and strong fight. The aggression and guarding ability are becoming a rare traits. The dogs are bred for short bursts of speed as a result the muscles are not as lean and the legs are short. I can go on and on but the purpose is not to discuss the problems but to offer solutions. And the best solution is to promote correct german shepherds and incorporate them into the breeding programs more and more so they can leave their types of animals as a part of the genepool.
One such dog from the show breeding standpoint is V Mexx vom Aurelius, SchH3. This dog is correct in anatomy, the titles are legit, has good character, and has the lowest ZW number in Germany as a result of his own progeny. Mexx has always been praised for his working ability at every seigeer or regional show. This is a very balanced dog who in my opinion has a lot to offer to our friends who like black and red colored dogs and in my sincere opinion, SV should be promoting this type of dog more aggressively.
