I am very new to GSDs. Our male came home with a very fuzzy, teddybear like coat. We live in New Mexico and it is finally starting to warm up. He has since started shedding this fuzzy coat to reveal a more coarse longer coat like his sisters. It is also coming through as very traditional "orangish" color like around his face.  I am going to assume this is normal, but would love your input.

Thanks Two Moons, Glad to know I'm not losing it. I will miss his big bear coat, but here's to the new coats to come.

The coat and the color and markings will all change between now and the first year.   Maybe he'll come out of his cocoon a real beauty.
Keep a photo record.

This is normal. Black & tans get lighter (more tan) as they mature.

Ditto.  And, if he is show lines,  or part show lines, a LOT  more tan on the body than now is possible.  Gsd puppies as adults hardly ever look a thing  like their puppy photos, unless you are getting some solid black.  Even the whites can end up lighter, or with buff markings as adults.   This is one of  the cosmos's way of keeping you on your toes!

Tell me about it. This coat changing is never ending to me.
This is Askia when she was a baby.

And this is her from last fall. I was lucky enough to get this picture of her.

And she still changes her coat color. She gets darker in the winter and lightens up in the summer. Her sister got lighter this past winter and is now getting darker. Those sable's always have you guessing :-)

I just wish I could see what he is going to look like full grown. GRR!

The only coat that really doesn't change in color is the bi-color. I think it is cool to watch the b&t's change and of course the sables change with the seasons.  If you look at the parents, it may give you an indication of the markings your pup will have.
Kelly, Askia is gorgeous!  Her stripe as a baby wasn't very wide~Or is it the pic?   Sables photograph differently with the lighting, too.

Our first girl was a little black wooly bear when we got her, now she is a blanket patterned tan & black. Her mask changes a little every year. My sable male keeps getting darker in the winter, lightens up a little in the summer. They change, & change, & change again. It's a wonderful thing! jh
