My husband & I have decided that we can't continue living in our little house with almost an acre & 4 big dogs. We're looking for a property with between 3 to 5 acres, home with 2-3 bedrooms. & a large finished (or could be finished) basement with walk out access, we thought we found the perfect place last fall, but the deal fell through when a huge crack in the foundation was discovered, sigh, & we backed out. We think this is probably a good time to purchase, & since we own our home now outright, we've got time & collateral to work with. No realtors, please! I know what I think would be the perfect set up for my dogs & our lifestyle, I thought it might be fun to share our dog/home dreams! My dogs are all spioled house dogs, so I'm not looking for an outdoor kennel type arrangement, but it would be nice to have a separate 'dog' area, so that at least 1 or 2 rooms would not have that opulent GSD fur coating! LOL! During my recovery from knee surgery, I was supposed to have a visiting nurse. Well, we had to nix that, because she was allergic to dogs, so it dawned on me that perhaps there should be 1 little area kept entirely dog-free, for those sort of things....personally I'm just as happy if non-dog people just don't visit! So what would you're perfect dog set-up be? Go crazy, dream big! jackie harris
Perfect setup? A serf or two!
well i would like a nice workshop for grooming/storage kitted out with a bath and force dryer etc
a hydro pool one with a treadmill in it
a summerhouse for a puppy play room
and a huge field lol
i can dream..... although i have saved up enough to get my workshop and grooming kit hehehehe
Yes, that's what I really loved about the house we almost bought, it had a huge basement, as the house was set into the side of a hill, the whole rear side of the basement was flush with the 2 acre backyard, the area was well lit, with a sliding glass door would have been lovely, there would have been enough room for each dog to have a mini indoor kennel of their own , instead of just a crate, & room for a work/grooming area, plumbing & a 3/4 bath, easily expandable...sigh.......it's going to be tough to find another like that, but it made no sense to buy what might fall down on you! jh
First, hit the lottery. Then buy a house that has atleast 5acres. Set up a trial size field for training. Have indoor/outdoor runs. A section for bathing. Along with an indoor training area for winter.

www.ultimatekanine.comOur 5 acres barely seems enough these days, but its on a steep hill. Look for property with a lot of flat terrain, preferrably surrounded by forest so nobody can see in or out. (less barking, less publicity)
Personally, with my own knees, ankles and back going to hell, I would avoid anything with stairs. I have about 200 lbs. of dirty laundry up here in the house because my washer and drier are in the basement. Doesn't seem to bother me when I run up and down 50x a day to whelp puppies, but laundry? NOT the same. LOL
I think I posted a thread on my perfect dog home here awhile back. ;-)

You did! I remember now --all tile with a central drain??? Well we have (I guess) given up our plan of refurbishing this house, & are seriously looking for a new place. And we noticed that some local townships have a 3 dog rule....something else to look out for?!?! jh
18 acres...for a training field and room for tracking...a 4000 sf Log Cabin House...with matching 2 car garage...A Large basement with plenty of room for more runs...and a Whelping Room with a full sized commercial Dog Bath...and Dryer...Oh...and did I mention a Barn...large enough for built in runs for other dogs...30' X 30'...with blown in insulation...a gas heater...concrete floors...and the runs are 5' X 5'...6' high made of 5 gauge wire...Plenty of room to store training equipment...

Nice web-site Mark,
Did YOU hit the lottery???
Nice thread
When a person only has one dog their needs are much more modest, but their dreams needn't be.
A coulple of acres with a tall tree line around the perimeter and a secondary tree line (shorter) lining the outer trees.
On the property a natural lake that stays clean by itself would be great. A long dock running into the lake - of course.
In a separate spot - on a flat sunny acre a tall, dense to the ground privet hedge labyrinth with mostly narrow paths .
A dog could spend some time moving through such.
On another separate spot a few acres completely fenced (not chain link but rather wooden and stone). These acres would combine a flat straight away at least the length of a football field and multiple terraced plains with fruit trees, lavender rows, cobbled paths and blue stone steps going up from terrace to terrace. In summer the ends of each terrace could have a standard (banner) flying - bright colors of course! This fenced area could serve as a "dog park" for the half dozen or so family dogs that could visit and play with some freedom.
If in the distance a happy funeral procession would be passing on a summer's day - a centenarian passing on - with the ebullient sound of a tuba as well as lyrical tinkle of bells - the picture would be complete.
