As a follow-up to a post a few months ago discussing my 10 year old female starting to favor her left back leg.  Had her x-rayed and she has alot of wear on the left hip and some on the right. She was OFA good at 2 years but I guess over the years her constant working and running just created wear.  Going to be tough as she is very high drive and demands to play.

I have had very good luck with chiropractic care, combined with moderate excercise such as swimming or walking my dogs have done pretty well in their later years

Best of luck

my knees used to be good, now that I'm old they bother me a bit........its part of getting old. ask you vet for a pain reliever, you could try smartflex repair 1/8 tsp top dress on food morning and night helps my old aussi with hip and elbow problems. after seeing the difference, I'm thinking of using smartflex for myself.

Thanks and will look into it.  We have started a G&C supplement a few months ago so hopefully that helps .

 maxandruby,

The most important thing you can do for the dog is assure she is proper weight. Even a few extra pounds will really impact her negatively, especially if she has a bad joint. There is only anecdotal evidence for Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate supplements. So if you try it and see no difference, don't be surprised. Sometimes people see what they want to see. This is true also in humans. Swimming is also a very useful exercise if you have a safe and warm place for her to swim. Just don't over do it initially. Aspirin or some canine non-steroidal anti-inflammatory might likely help her too.

Good luck.
