Pnly problem Sitasmom..I dont know any of the breeders that do that testing as you posted.. I tried buying dogs all last year from 7 top kennels and none of them showed me or TAMMY jO any ;such testing....DNa and ofa yes...Vet  check yes but none of them should or had any testing like that on their pups or dogs.

THe price of pups on our market today has nothing to do with OFA testing. SV titled dogs in Germany, Eurosport dogs dont have it do THey...???? YOu just bouight one..DID they do that testing on your pup..?

You will find that the White German Shepherd breeders are the ones most likely to test for everything under the sun.  Many do not test for various things because they have not found it to be an issue in their lines and therefore think it is just a waste of money.  Just for peace of mind (mine and puppy owners) I do the following tests on mine: hips (including PennHIP), elbows, cardiac, eyes, thyroid, vWD, and the new DM DNA.  I only have a couple of dogs, so it is much easier to get them where they need to be for testing.

The WGSD clubs started testing for cardiac issues (especially Aortic stenosis) Degenerative myelopathy. Hips, elbows and Von Wildebrands some 25-30 years ago. www.hoofprint.ws/genetics.html because of the smaller gene pool it was felt that it could more quickly lead to DNA tagging for various problems.  Most of the larger breeders participated in offering info on and pedigrees for any progeny effected.  Joanne Chanyi of Hoofprint Kennel in Canada gathered the info for the club.  The club even has a list of particular dogs who had, or were known to definately carry traits.  This work has helped the GSD breed as a whole.

(Off topic but Joanne has produced numerous SAR, Police, Guide and assistance dogs,  and is Honest beyond belief about her litters.  I can 100% recommend her kennel, and add that she doesn't just breed for a color.  www.hoofprint.ws/service_dogs.html I've known her since the 70's)

puppies are a gamble, too young for hip and elbow cert's. i didn't ask about the rest.

I was wondering what tests people do on their dogs BEFORE adding them to their breeding programs..........

Ive seen many breeders who have their dogs certified; elbows, hips, thyroid, and cardiac. I was wondering if this is more or less normal for responsible breeders.

Anything that is 98% or higher in normalcy I am not testing for and will take my chances on being ok 98 times out of 100 times, just as I do when I drive my car.
