Kalibeck

Finally got brave enough to take my big dogs out today by myself for the first time since my surgery. My Girl was a good girl, stayed next to me except for some woo-hoo bounciness, but all in all, pretty well behaved. But here's the big surprise.....Beckett vom Frauengarten earned his Supreme Dog Guardian title today. It may not show up on any score book, but he was the absolute perfect Gentleman. He tried bringing me a stick to throw, shook it around a little, then made eye contact with me, dropped the stick, came quietly over & sniffed my bad knee, and then positioned himself next to my bad knee, which is on the Right side, not the left where he usually heels. And he stayed there. We took a gentle little walk, he kept his body between my knee & anything that came along, even trying to shield me from the leaves that were blowing along the ground, even though I could tell by his little quiver that he would really rather be chasing them. When the neighbor dog came out, he stayed at his post, looking up at me & then to the porch, like he was suggesting we go in before the loose dog could cause trouble, he would usually raise his hackles & stare him down, but not today. He hung right there next to my knee as I went back up the ramp, & stood facing the gate until I was in the house, then he brought up the rear. How do they know to do this sort of thing? It might not seem like much, but I was nervous out there alone, & he understood that, and did his best to make sure I was safe. What a dog! This is a pup from Shelley's 'B' litter by the way.  No amount of money can buy intelligence like that ! And he's good looking, too! My Hero! jackie harris

What an amazing dog. There are many special times in our lives shared by our dogs that we simply don't question how or why we just accept them as their special gifts to us and that was one of them.

I know your reconstruction surgery will take you some months to get over but I hope your knee atleast feels better soon so that you can be out enjoying your dogs again, atleast your weather should be improving and that will lift your spirits some.

It's amazing the things they can sense!  Then just do something and make you in awe of them.
It seems you and he have a very special bond!
Hope your recovery is swift.

Good Boy Beckett!
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

4pack

That would be nice, I wouldn't expect it with mine though. He'd probably knock me over first thing after not seeing me for days and put me back in the hospital. He's not the sensetive/smart type.

4pack, that's exactly why it was such a surprise to me. Usually Kali, my female is the sensitive one, & Beck, well, Beck has been a teen-age boy! But this time Beckett really stepped up, & it just blew me away that he wouldn't fuss on the left, he clung to that right side, actually making contact with my leg the whole time we were out side. And so gentle! Dang, it made me all misty-eyed, that big goof-ball never acted that sweetly to me before! And he's been like glue since we've been inside, Carl finally had to crate him, so I could change the dressing....?????? I just don't know what got into him, if he's that smart it's scary smart, What a good bud! jh

That's really cool.  Becket is a good and gentle soul with you.  Mine............not so much.

This brings tears of joy to my eyes. Beckett is a good GSD in every sense of the word. This is what we TRY to breed for... that odd sense of when to screw around and when its SERIOUS and their beloved owner NEEDS them in earnest, and they RESPOND in amazing, dependable fashion.

I am proud to have produced such a good dog from my breeding program... not altogether surprised, as this is not the first time I have heard such things from owners of dogs from these 3  breedings, but very pleased. I wish I could take all the credit, but I only followed the path Horst had already set and proofed before I purchased Gabi and T. (Carol)

BTW- Beckett works like a house on fire. I can't wait till Jackie is well and can enjoy the REST of her beloved Beckett's talents.

I always like a good Dog Hero story myself.

In the winter of 2007, I had been suffering from a bout of disequlibrium (combination of an ear infection and being over-tired.) I took an evening walk with a young male I was training, lost my balance and fell into a stream, and the dog must have went in with me. This stream was normally quite shallow but was at that time flooded and the current quite strong. I vaguely recall being on my back for a while, struggling to keep my head above water. But I held onto the dog leash and he pulled me back to shore.

It's great to hear such heartwarming stories. Especially when I own one of his sisters! Little miss Diva Vom Frauengarten. She is the most clear headed dog I've seen, and she's ALWAYS thinking! Have fun with him. He sounds like a great dog. :)
