Sunsilver

I've been feeding Performatrin Super-Premium Large Breed for many years (Canada's Pet Valu stores house brand.) I've been very pleased with it, until recently, they decided to change the formula. They gave no warning of this, so I had to change immediately, no gradual transition. My male had terrible gas, and my female just plain turned her nose up at it!

So, after lots of searching, and checking price and ingredients, AND availability, I finally settled on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.  The dogs seem to be doing okay on it, and Star's coat has never looked better. She just had her heat in January, and often a bitch will blow coat after that, but hers looks great. No more bad smells, either!

Now, last night, I realized it is manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods, a company which has had several major recalls in recent years, the worst, of course, being for using wheat gluten from China wich was adulterated by melamine.

Any of you feed this food? What's your opinion of it? Should I change foods (again!) just because Diamond makes it?

Some of the brands available at a fairly affordable price in the U.S. are unbelievably expensive here in Canada, so that limits my choices. Also, I live in an area which is largely rural, and most of the people don't have a lot of money, so that further limits my choices a bit.  Certain foods which sell well elsewhere (e.g., Canidae) aren't available here.

I'd appreciate some suggestions especially from the Canadians on the board.

Thanks!

Since the recalls Diamond has changed their ways. I live not far from a diamond plant here in South Carolina.
They now have MULTIPLE checks (well over 100 -150) for the dog food and they can't afford to be in the situation they were previously in yet again. So I feel confident feeding the food to my dogs. I have more than many!
Before I decided to Feed TOTW (Taste of the Wild) I fed Chicken Soup (my dogs had softer stools but I did like it). I was hesitant to continue feeding the TOTW (and when I fed Canidae I wasn't pleased they were bagging it at a Diamond Plant) but upon raising my concerns with my local director for the company I place my orders for food he assured me not only had he been in the Diamond Plant Locally but many plants in the states (not just Diamond). He says since the change Diamond is one of the cleaniest plants he's been in.
I've spoke with a few workers I come across also locally and they too say a lot has changed, it is a very clean atmosphere compared to before! So, hearing this I feel confident and plan to continue feeding TOTW which is made by diamond and is grain free, I also enjoy mixing that with Diamond Extreme Athlete (still corn free but does have grains like rice).
All I can do is offer my experience with Diamond Products. My puppy buyers feed Taste of the Wild and haven't found a better food for a better price. I've tried them all and I keep coming back.
ANY dog food company can go wrong, even the ones that GROW Their OWN products, and even RAW products, sadly food is unlike a compute you can't program it to be the same every time, and as we know even computers can be a mess up.
If you have doubts don't feed it, but if you do, I'd rest assured know Diamond learned the HARD way and are taking additional measures to not end up in multi million dollar law suits again!

hello, I had fed Chicken Soup ... and it was ok, but the dogs' coats became a little less glossy and stools became very loose and orange color. Changed to TOTW and it was great for several months, then last bag of Bison seemed to change the kibble texture and color. My dogs stools all immediately became pudding like and more orange.

I am back to RAW .

What gave me faith in Performatrin was they PULLED their food from the shelves when one of their suppliers failed to meet their standards on a quality check. Nothing harmful about the ingredient: it just wasn't up to standard!

It's taken a lot of hours of research and checking labels to find a suitable food that's affordable, so, I'm going to stay with it for now, but keep my options open.

Unfortunately, TOTW was either not available here, or was too expensive for my budget, as it's not one of the foods on the list I made.

I'm glad to know your dogs were okay with Chicken Soup.  Here's the website I used to check ingredients:

Hello

I fed Sam's Club Exceed for years, but had a 8 yr old GSD die, way to early for me, did not do necropsy. It made me do some research and I decided that maybe the food I fed had something to do with it. I changed their diets and am now feeding TOTW and CSFDLS.

I feed 4 GSD's, 1 Pit Bull, and 2 old Min Pins.  I feed my 4 month GSD pup 1/2 TOTW, 1/2 CS, the 2 - 3 yr old GSDs all TOTW, and 7 yr old GSD and 3 yr old Pit Bull CS, and the 2 Min Pins get TOTW one day, the next day get CS, etc.

All the dogs are doing great on their food.  1 GSD has a sensitive stomach, he loves the High Prarie, coats are actually shiny and soft, stools are small volume and normal.  I too had some thoughts due to Diamond, cannot afford to feed Orijen so I am pleased with what I have.

I have noticed thought that TOTW is not real consistent in the color, size, and greasiness of the pieces, but have not seen to much of a change in overall conditions of the dogs.

I would recommend either food.

Ive been feeding it for a while now.

3 out of 4 dogs are doing very well on it.

the 4th is on chicken soup - large puppy and has really loose poop. I'll be switching him to adult, if that doesn't work I'll go to tast of the wild and see if it gets any better.

I tried it for a while, then after I opened a new bag, my dogs all became ill, loose stools, etc. During my research at that time I discovered it was produced by Diamond, & that was the last straw for me...we never went back. For what it's worth. jh

Kalibeck, my female wasn't eating the Chicken Soup regular formula, though she was fine iwth the Chicken Soup Large Breed. I've figured it out: she doesn't like certain kinds of fish! Both foods contain fish meal, but the regular formula has more of it. You can smell it the minute you open the bag.

Since only the regular formula is available at the nearest pet food store, we've switched to Canidae All Life Stages. We're also going to try a bag of Horizon Legacy.

Changing dog foods has turned out to be quite an adventure!  :(

Diamond Food has a liar for a veterinirian.. She lied to me for 6 months.  Diahrea on Chicken Soup, Lamb and Rice and any one of their foods

Exceed from Sam;s has menadione in it and I will not use it either.  www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?

Feed there questionable ingredients for years and years, yes  , what the liver, kidney and spleen, and the rest of the organs have to deal with , without adding more to fight.
