I have two akc reg gsd's, but didn't know what I was doing when I bought them. I have no clue about thier lines except the three generation pedigree you get from akc. I would really like to learn more about thier lines, but don't know how to go about doing so. Please help, thanks

You could start by using the "GSD Search" feature (upper left hand side) and type in each of the parents names and see if anything shows up. Be careful to spell the names correctly or they will not show up even if they are in here. If they do not show up, then try the four grandparents, and then the great-grand parents. You never know what you might find out! Good luck with this.

Look up Canine Family Tree, Barbara Van Ryan provides one of the most beautiful pedigrees on parchment paper and you can let her know how many generations you want.

Diane, try googling the kennel names of the dogs. Often the kennel's website will give you pedigree information. If you don't find what you're looking for, e-mail the kennel.

You may have to pay AKC for a 5 or 7 generation pedigree to get started.

No luck on googeing the names, What does that mean? I will contact AKC, but they don't tell you much except names, is it possible I won't be able to find out anything about my dogs. I don't even know for sure if they are american or german, working lines show or both.  Thank everyone for thier help.

Why don't you type in some of the names in the pedigree on here and see if anyone recognizes them? I think that would be some kind of start.

Yes, we could at least tell you what country the names were from, and if they were working or show lines. That would give you somewhere to start, at least.

If the dogs are AKC registered, AKC will, for a fee, provide you with a 7 generation pedigree. So-called 'research pedigrees' are also available online for a price. You'd get one of those when all you need is the names of the dogs, and not a fancy piece of paper to prove your dog's ancestry.

Also, AKC has a dog lookup, but all it will give you is the registration number. Won't even tell you the colour of the dog...

I also know someone that does do pedigree research for people if they can not find their dog's or a majority of them. Of course they do charge for this, but if your interested in emailing them just PM me or email me personally and I can give you thier information.
