Hello.  I have read some of the various posts on whelping boxes.

If one were to use a 4 foot by 4 foot box...made out of melamine...is 2 feet too high for the sides?  Or would 16 inches suffice?  I have been told by a few people that the pups get out quickly if the sides are only 1 foot high.  Is that the case?

When working with melamine are you finding that anything cracks when putting screws in?

What height as well do you recommend for the pig rails to be off the floor?

Lastly - what height do you recommend for the BOTTOM of the "entrance cutout" to make it easy for the bitch during whelping?

Thanks!

This is the box i told you I hate..THE FRONT PIECE FITS INTO THE GROVE AND LATCHES ON THE SIDES THEN YOU PUT THE TOP DOWN..NOTE THE END IS RABBIT WIRE..THIS IS WITHOUT THE BUMPERS..NEXT PIC HAS BUMPERS IN IT   SAME BOX   FIX IT WITH A FRONT , SOLID TOP AND A DOOR..THEN YOU PUT LIGHTS IN THE TOP AND WONT HAVE TO HANG ON END LIKE i DID IN THIS PIC..

WIRE GOES OUT THE CORNER TOP WHEN THE FRONT PIECE IS IN PLACE..BOX IS TOO HEAVY AND I HATE THE TAKING APART....REDESIGNED IT WITH A DOOR INSTEAD..AND NO JUMPING OUT OVER ANYTHING..

See the wedge in the corner for the pipe to lay on? piece of 2 x 4 cut and turned screwed into walls     we used screws everywhere   no nails.

Union is black to hold pvc together.. they make white.  lol    we used what we had in barn...

Do a google search on the whelping box. com and breederbase .com.. the first one is an awesome box and quite pricey but I'm told it will last forever...

The one in breederbase is also on J-Bwholesales website.. is made of corrugated cardboard.. I'm on my 2nd one...surprisingly they last quite long.. this is probably the last tiime for this box but its been thru at least 5 maybe 6 litters

You will find the dimensions on the websites.. mine is 4'x4'.. next time I might go with the 4'x5' so there is room for me!!

Good luck.. more fun!

Here's my 8x6 on each side made out of plywood, only had acouple of pups that escaped!
2 1/2 feet high for the doors on the front, nice coat of paint.     I guess the boys got their materials at Home Depot...

And don't forget the pig rails!  I really never got around to putting latches on the doors, so I always prop up
some buckets of newspapers in front of them, but it seems to have always worked out, cause the mother dog
steps up on the buckets to jump back in with her pups.

For a simple whelping box design, go to http://www.robertforbus.com and look at the middle of the page. You will see the link The Whelping Box Drawings In Adobe Format . Click once, and it will take you to a download page. This box design is 4'-0" x 4'-0" and has served me well.

Best Regards,

Funny this should come up today. My friend and I spent 6 hrs. last night building a large whelping box. It took about 8 hrs and two liters of wine. There will be NO pictures today. LOLOLOL
Some people really shouldn't be allowed to handle power tools.
