I am looking for as much info as possible on long coated German Shepherd Dogs. I recently acquired Zisso, a 1.5 year old male, that has a long coat. I have never had a long coat GSD before and would be interested in tips on care for the coat (aside from brushing, etc) and any special foods that might help his coat stay healthy. When I got him he was slightly matted behind the ears, which I am tending to; he went to the groomer, but they failed to get the mats out back there.
Also I have read that long coats are not eligible to show, and was wondering if that is correct and if so why.
Any and all information regarding long coat GSD's would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

I was surprised at how easily she dries off and shakes out burrs.
The German judging standard prohibits the long coat. The AKC and international ring penalize it, but not heavily.

Sniffydog, Thank you for the fast reply!
Now I have more questions...
First of all, the canned salmon or mackerel...do you mean as in people food, or is there a specialty dog food made of these ingredients?
Next, my problem with the mats Zisso came with is that they are so very close to the back of his ear. He also came with a large lack of confidence, a little on the easily shaken/ scared side, so my fear is that I could nick him and cause our new relationship unneeded stress. I do not want to give him cause to not trust me fully. So I am taking him to my vet to have them snip those mats. Aside from that, he does love to be brushed so once these mats are out, there will be no more as I brush him daily.
I will not be showing him, but that does not lessen my interest in knowing all I can, and one question I have about showing quality is are they still show quality if they are neutered?
Despite being 1.5 yrs old, he came with little training. We are currently in basic Obedience, and will continue on with Intermediate and Advanced. He is a pet/companion and altho he just joined me on February 7, 09 we have a very strong bond. Zisso is a delight to have

Okie Amazon...I kind of thought perhaps he would not be eligible to show due to being neutered. Not that I mind at all.
I wonder if either of you would mind taking a look at him, just for kicks...I know you can't tell a lot with a photo, especially one that they are not standing properly, but I am curious what other people think. I am extremely interested in his pedigree.
I also just read for the first time about Alsation..what is that and why does it seem to be looked down on? Just curious here is all.
Thanks again

Alsation is what the British called the GSD because of the wars fought with Germany; there was just too much anti-German sentiment. Now the debate rages that these lines have diverged to the point some want to either, make it a separate breed, or abandon the name altogether.

Forgot to say that this was right after a little romp out in the rain and he had not yet been brushed.
