Dawn G. Bonome

by Dawn G. Bonome on 19 March 2009 - 13:03

I will be getting my new pup on the 30th of March, and the Breeder has her  pups on Royal Canin Puppy food. I am very hesitant of feeding Royal Canin due to the recall of  the food in the past.

Is the food the same in Germany, or is it totally different from the RC here in the United States?

What about Bil Jac or Eagle Pack Puppy?

Hello Dawn...I take it your talking about a German Shepherd puppy...right?...To begin with I wouldn't use any type of puppy food on a German Shepherd...I use and recommend a good quality adult food...
I personally think Royal Canin is too expensive and not worth the price...but everyone to their own...Just use a good quality adult dog food for your pup...But I'd ask the breeder for a little bit of her food so you can begin to wean your pup over to whatever you'll be using...
Once again this is a personal choice...but I like to use foods that are chicken based...

Yep, A German Shepherd pup. Puppy Carla will be coming in from Germany, so I don't think that the Breeder can send food to America from Germany.  I think that the Protein level in Puppy Food is too high for pups. I would much rather add yogurt, or an egg or cottage cheese.

What are you feeding?

I'm with Bob on that
Unless you want to see signs of Pano or hip dysplasia later on in life, don't feed your pups puppy food, it has too much
high protein in it, that leads to rapid bone growth.

I feed Adult dog food from day one, to everybody, I've done that for five generations.
You want slow steady bone growth, your pup will still grow to his full potential, just at a slower rate.

At the moment I feed my dogs www.frommfamily.com

Puppies are at a different stage in their life than adults. They require sufficient levels of protein and energy to support correct growth. Puppies grow at a fast rate and they must have the right nutrients for this growth, that is why the protein levels are higher. The dog food companies do a lot of research on this and if more protein was harmful to puppies then they would not make it so, it would be cheaper to make anyway. Would you feed your human baby adult food? If you do then you will be depriving them of vital nutrients required for growth and development.
BTW, I have all my dogs on Royal Canin and the I have great results with all of them. The GSD Puppy and Adult food are really the best you can give your german shepherd. And the levels of Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulphate is the highest you will ever find in any dog food (1000 mg per kg combined), so there is no need to add extra supplements. The recall you mentioned did not involve the GSD formulas but some of the sensible choice line.

Trini, you're right about one thing, the dog food companies do a lot f research.
On how to use fillers to increase the "protein" ratio without actually benefitting the dog who cannot digest the protein source (ie, corn).
They also research how to design the bag and marketing just right, and keep people in the dark about food content and health risks.
And they seem to have mastered it so well that despite recall after recall, study after study, (and lawsuit after lawsuit) people still blindly feed the crap to their dog.

After weaning, a human child has essentially the same nutritional needs as a human adult. Baby food only differs from adult food in that it's slightly more bland, and it's of a texture that babies can handle.  So, bad analogy.

They do a lot of research "and if more protein was harmful to puppies then they would not make it"?

CORN is harmful to dogs, and yet commercial dog foods are FULL of it.

Royal Canin puppy food has caused Panno in more than one instance that I know recently including one of my puppies. It's protein level is too high and is meant to develop fast growth which is not desired in a German Shepherd puppy. Bil Jac has BHA/BHT in it which can cause cancer, I used to feed Science Diet and lost a dog to the cancer at the age of 5 which these preservatives can cause. At that time I knew nothing about BHA/BHT or Ethoxiquins.  I don't know anything about Eagle Pack. We have used the California Natural and had great success. If you are able to get some Martin's K9 Formula it is wonderful food and geared towards German Shepherds and it is suitable for all ages.

Yes, Bil Jac has BHA/BHT in it so you want to steer away from foods like that.  I've fed Royal Canin in the past, but the cost just keeps going up and my dogs were never that in love with it.  I've used Blue Buffalo puppy and adult foods for almost two years now and my dogs have done very well on it.  Good ingredients, price has also increased, but not horribly, I buy it at Petsmart rather than have to order online and pay shipping prices.  Petco now carries it, but charges $5-6 more than Petsmart.  I'd like to try other brands like Eagle Pack, but the cost is just too much when you factor in S&H and in my area there aren't than many choices.  On Blue Buffalo though, you don't have to feed as much (which is great if you have more mouths to feed), I also supplement with other real foods and Fresh Factors tablets from Springtime.  My dogs are very healthy with great coats.

Dawn, I was in a small "natural" pet store today and was blown away by some awesome new foods coming in from Canada. I took home brocures on Go Natural and Acana (that stuff looks awesome!) and I will be switching to Taste of the Wild for my dogs shortly.  Bil-Jac and Eagle Pack are nothing special. ZiwiPeak (made in New Zealand) is a freeze dried raw diet, looked pretty nice, too, but pricey. I'm thinking about using it for tracking bait, has a sort jerky type texture. I've had pretty good luck with Fromm foods as well.

I "Strongly" recommend Pro Pac, performance puppy food. I,myself have used it for years, for my own German Shepherd puppies. It is written up in my contracts for puppies to use pro-pac, puppy.  In the many years I have had shepherd pups, I  have ,myself, NEVER dealt with pano. I have had 2 others tell me their pups have come down with pano. When asked if they kept pups on the pro-pac, it was told they switched to Pedigree and Purina.
A big No-No as far as I am concerned.it is very cost efficient and the pups are lively, plump, and Full OF Energy.
This little girl, 10 weeks is Just Full Of IT!!!!!   Pro-Pac Girl!
