Does anyone here have any experience with supracaudal gland hyperplasia (canine version of stud tail)?
My 7.5 month old boy has a spot of matted, brittle and breaking hair on the side of his tail, just below the base and about 3" long. Our vet thinks an overactive oil gland is the culprit.
I wash it with degreasing shampoo, but it doesn't seem to have any effect and the spot is slowly growing. If anybody has suggestions what else might help... thank you in advance.

Two days after my dog had hip/elbow x-ray for OFA he developed a bald spot at the tail base.I thought it was a hot spot/stress response to the anesthesia. The vet gave an antibiotic. My dog didnt lick it very much.I did use a plastic halo coller for a couple of weeks. But I dont think either made a difference. The hair took 4 mos to return to normal in that area.I read that some dogs remain bald there forever. He is a very dominant, confident dog.Someone told me that this condition occurs mostly in dogs with high testosterone level.
Good luck with it.
