Does anyone know if there are medical terms for each of the dogs toes?  Similar to the ring, index, and middle fingers of humans?

Thanks,

-Calvin

I believe they go by digit numbers....

I checked the Merck Manual and couldn't find anything specific. I think they just go by numbers, 1, 2, 3...however many toes the dog has. Yes, some have extra toes.

And to think someone was just complaining about how people jump all over odd questions. Nobody's pounced here. Yet. Although "this little piggy" did spring to mind when I saw the thread.

Eeny, meeny, etc.??

How do they number the toes?  From the dew claw out, or in towards the dew claw? (assumign the dog has one...)  Also, are the number repeated (1-5 right,m 1-5 left) or 1-10?  Finally, are they numbered in the same fashion on each foot?  I.e. the first toe in from the dew claw on each front foot is #1?

Thanks,

Call your vet in the morning and ask.  I did once have a question for my vet about a dog's swollen toe and I counted from the dewclaw out to tell her which toe. We did this over the phone and she understood. Yes, left 1,2,3,4,5, and right 1,2,3,4,5.

skeletal bones or the wrist to digits - capals (wrist), metacarpal (hand), phalenges ("fingers")

In the ankle- tarsals, metatarsels (foot) phalanges.

They then use the number system to differenciate which toe.

The names for the phalanges on a dog's foot are:

proximal
middle
distal
ungual
dew claw

They are named from the outside in, i.e., the proximal digit would be our little finger/small toe.
