I need help.....My 11 month old is loving the transition from royal canin to orijen/raw food except she is itching alot. I think its the chicken, her orijen is 6 fresh fish and since i put the raw chicken she has been eating grass and licking on her paws....should I stop the raw food and stick to the orijen? or what. I am despirate. I have so much chicken in my fridge/freezer but if thats the culprit then I can get rid of it. Please help

Chicken is most likely the culprit.  Hope you have alot of receipes.  Chicken is a huge allergy  for dogs along with corn.  I still can't figure out why those are always the 2 big ingredients in most dog food.  Oh yeah, $$$$.

I would try putting the dog on either one or the other. Either raw OR Orijen. I know some people feed both, but when you dont know what is causing the itchiness, it is a good idea to keep them on only one thing. If you stop the Orijen and find she is only itching when she eats raw, then try switching protein source. Try turkey or beef. Also, remember that it takes awhile for the dog to get used to a new food, so it might take awhile for the itchiness to go away. Is the dog also getting veggies and fruit and omega oils?

Best advice I see here is feed one or the other.
Keep things simple.   If the itching came with the addition of chicken then stop using it.   If it was something else recently added same rule stop using it.  See if things don't go back to normal.   What bothers one dog doesn't mean it bothers them all.   I had a problem with fish products with one dog.  Mine have no problems with chicken or corn, its different for each.

Some dog aren't allergic to anything and can eat anything.   Eating grass means nothing, they all do it.

Keep it simple, make changes gradually over several days a little at a time.  Watch for changes and remember what your added or have taken away.

Once you find something that works you can add other things to a basic diet, just keep a watchful eye.
Stay away from gimmic aditives and pills.   The dog doesn't need all that kind of crap.
And most expensive does not mean best quality.

You said the pup was on R/C,was she itching on that food?I do know that the R/C has NOT alot of chicken cause they choose to use more soya(I was told they changed the formula cause of a chicken meal shortage, imagine that not enough chicken out there). You must resolve this now or you will be in for a very rough ride with this.STOP one of what you are feeding and only give one food.If you choose the Origen then use that for now and only that.NO treats for now until you figure out what it is.It does'nt always mean its the chicken,it could also be something in the other food as well so pick one preferably the kibble for now so the pup will have all it needs. They also make a line called Acana that is less protein and also comes in grainless just to let you know.I know that you are trying to do the best for your dog like many of us BUT sometimes LESS IS MORE and we make the problems ourselves by complicating things. For your pups sake, pick one and give it a couple weeks to let the itching subside. If you see the itching increase, then you will know its the fish she is probably reacting to.What I have learned in the last few years of battling with food allergies with one of my boys is that if something is working DONT change it cause at the end of the day ,dog food is dog food.I know we like to give the best but it does'nt always work  like that.Hope this helps.

Chicken allergies are not common.... have been feeding raw for a good number of years and also distribute and chicken is one of the proteins we usually have customers whose dogs have allergies when on kibble start with . That doesn't mean it isn't possible but its not the norm and my experience has been quite good and we have had a large amount of success .. I just switch my dogs when I get them.. I use a digestive enzyme and yogurt and they do just fine
I'm getting a new puppy in a few weeks and I know she is being fed kibble but she gets switched as soon as she is in my arms!

Your puppy could also be blowing her coat, a first season must be coming up... girls always blow their coats.. changing food can cause shedding.. this crazy weather can also do it... one day 70, next day snow,, cold spell, really warm spell.. also confuses the dogs system

Hope it all works out... feel free to pm me if you'd like

As I have said before....and learned the hard way....after seeing this itching/scratching and paw licking...have your Pup Allergy tested. Don't just start swatting flies and try the never ending hit and miss system. Mine showed allergies to Chicken and having put him on raw as suggested....just made it worse...till I had him tested. I would not have thought Chicken would be such a problem.....but for my boy...it is. Along with other things I would have never even given a second thought...IE Sycamore Trees...very bad for him.....if you want to get to the bottom of things faster and at least scientifcally...not just hit and miss and hope....get your Pup allergy tested...it may just help you ease his discomfort....Good Luck!

I agree with MaxBear, have tests mine showed allergies to Chicken, Turkey, Sheep/Lamb, Beef, White Fish and Dust mites. He had been RAW fed for over 18mths when his allergies started.

Wildmoor, out of curiosity, what do you feed your dog? The allergy tests showed that he is just about allergic to every common protein source out there. Are you feeding a duck or venison formula like what Natural Balance offers?

And responding to DKiah, chicken allergies are not as common compared to corn, wheat or soy allergies, but chicken is the most common protein allergy source. It is also the cheapest meat source out there and the most commonly used.

Sometimes, a dog may not show allergy symptoms to a protein source like chicken when it is an ingredient in dry dog food because in some grain heavy formulas there is actually very little of it in the food even when it is one of the first ingredients especially if it is not in meal form. But when you feed it raw that's when the dog starts reacting to it.

Mars Inc. is probably ruining R/C and Nutro since they now own both of them, and trying to turn them into Pedigree.

It is my understanding, the 1st ingredient in Royal Canin GSD formula is chicken meal, so if you have been feeding this for a long time it is possible for a dog to become hyper sensitive and alergic.   Same thing is now happening with some dogs fed only lamb based kibble.  So while not common, it is seen more and more.  This is one of the main reasons why many of us who feed RAW, do not feed only one protein source.

If you changed both her kibble and added RAW what is making you think it's the chicken?   Had you switched from RC to Orijen with no problem, but are seeing a problem now that you have added chicken?
