We have just gotten approval to purchase a new farm. Right now we have 8 acres in North Dakota but are looking to upgrade to 24!! I would like to get involved in herding, maybe even purchase sheep for the farm. Can you recommend breeders or lines for herding? I know GSDs are herding dogs but I'd like to explore the various lines. Thanks, ~Jill Friday

Kirschental is the kennel that springs to my mind when I think of the GSD and herding. I love the look of their dogs and the fact that they work and compete at the highest level too!

All the best with your new farm. Sounds like a great opportunity!

Both  kennel names/breeders have been active in the venue you speak of..However you have a world of German Shepherds out there from quality German lines that could be perfectly suitable for your needs.

Many breeders and owners  in the  us have dogs of thier own and pups placed in homes such as yours were they will be used  for herding and ranch work..out of neccesity or possibly just  desire to compete  that arena.. We do as do many others.

The links above are good starting places for you.

Best wishes with the new homestead,

My herding female is out of Ulf's kennel.  Check out his kennel page, he might be planning another breeding this year.

My male came from a herding farm in Germany, vom Dolderbrunnen.  Ulf's foundation bitch was from Dolderbrunnen kennel.

Ulf is in this country (New York State?) so I'd say that's the place to start. Kirschental has wonderful dogs, but the focus has been on showlines for quite some time. I believe that if you specifically want a dog for herding it is important that you make  it  very clear when, and if, you contact Marion and Karl Fuller - I think he still breeds for herding, but on a much more selective basis, for people he knows.

Von Linmarc kennels in Florida has a bitch that came right from a job herding sheep in Germany. Her dam is a well known herding dog as well (Venja?). Im going of memory so you would need to verify the names. Vom Haus Kind I believe is the kennel name. Im sure he can point you in the right direction.
