As the title says should our shows be upgraded to include proof of health tests say for instance once hips/elbows are scored when you get your score back should it include a credit sized card with dogs name KC number tattoo number and hip/elbow scores that can then be checked by the judge as it seems strange that a dog with a missing tooth is penelised but a dog with a 106 hip score or a 3 elbow score can and does win now i have never heard of a missing tooth killing or causing severe pain to a dog and what would it cost to produce this small card not much also it would mean when you have a dog at stud you would only need to see this card and check tattoo number its just a thought but one i think deserves your comments

I like your idea - and I know its something that has been raised before on a different thread.  It doesnt have to be a tattoo number it could be microchip - these are easily checked these days.

After all no judge has x-ray vision and it would then mean that Champions are sound in health as well.

As for the stud idea - excellent, how many people are staying close to home because they trust the stud owner etc., rather than risk a stranger?  Verification as you've described would make it so much easier.  For the studs, the card should be reissued each year - with the scores of its progeny, giving a wider perspective.  After that data is available for anyone with a subscription to either the KC breed supplement or the cd rom.

the reason for the tattoo is because not everyone has the machine to read microchips and if you are taking your bitch to a stud all the owner has to do is check the card with the tattoo number and he knows that this bich has been scored etc same applies to the bitch owner

i was thinking along the lines of say a driving licence you get the green paper with all your details then you get the pink card which relates to your main licence if we went along similar lines these cards could be updated when you add more health tests to your dog so you would have a card that states hip/elbow scores heam neg dna etc so if you were judging a class with 2 exhibits of equal quality one has the card stating it has all relevent health tests and the other does not then the outcome to who is placed where should be obvious but at the moment a dog without any tests can and does get high places at shows so inadvertantly we are promoting those who do not test their stock

Sue B

Hi Jim,   would this card also contain dogs name, breeding, owners / breeders name , character assessment via survey &/or working qualifications? If so, what would then be the difference between a KC and WUSV run show, other than a CC instead of a grading? As for tattoo rather than microchip, I believe even the SV are now moving towards the microchip in preference to the tattoo now.

Regarding Health checks before awards etc , I see where you're coming from and would love for it to be a reality  but the amount of administration required to check dogs against their paperwork would require more time and people than the majority of our Breed Clubs have available and this alone makes it impractical. Not to mention the work involved at all breed shows and whatever one brings in under the KC umbrella the KC want it to FIT every breed the same otherwise they will never wear it. Then there is the fact of storing all this data you have collected to ensure the judge doesnt forget which one has hips, elbows, eyes, heamo, etc tested before handing out the award to the wrong dog (providing there are any dogs entered at all, as few will have taken every test and no-one is going to turn up unless they have a chance).  The germans have all this info computerised and all their main breed shows have computer access to this database on the day, how many venues do we have that could or would supply this access for us?

Sorry to be playing devils advocate here Jim, but wanting too much too soon if very often the reason why so many idea's fail. Too much too soon makes people rebel, idea's then get tossed aside and once again the chance to make any progress fails.

What we really need to be concentrating on at this time is in getting the KC to ONLY register litters from Health tested parents, starting with the Hips and then working up to include other things over the next few years. Whilst at the same time getting VETS trained and clued up with the taking of Elbows and in making sure they check the Tattoo or Microchip number of the animal and put it onto the hip plates , as not all dogs being xrayed are identified so not all vets do any i.d checks when taking xrays. The only thing they check in the KC Reg no. before putting that onto the plates which as all of us know is totally useless in accurate identification.

Get these things in place and it goes without saying the majority of dogs entering our rings would be healthier.

i understand where you are coming from sue b but we could start with hips/elbows then work it from there the little pink card you get with your driving licence equates to your big green licence so it could be done in the same way by the BVA/KC when they score the hips/elbows it does not need to have the name of the dog or the owners just the dogs KC number and tattoo number with the total scores which could be checked in a matter of seconds at any show  we need to start somewhere and lets not forget this is already in place all we are asking for is a plastic card with the same details as the a4 sheet cant see it costing more than a fiver for this
