I HATE YEAST!  Sorry I just have to vent here, I am so extremely frustrated.  Those of you who've read my posts about Apollo before know he has supposedly severe allergies and when I got him in August 8 he was COVERED in sores, smelled AWFUL, was missing a lot of hair on his back/rear end, horrible diarrhea, and probably some stuff I am forgetting.  Of course I was completely livid (to say the least) with the kennel he was at, I thought an individual was responsible, and when I called the kennel, they were responsible....I will remain livid probably.  The kennel owner does Schutzhund in my area (Southeastern), and of course, I have to see her and her partner in the dogs at trials.  I'm doing better with anger but my blood still boils, my dog could have died. So I immediately get him to the vet, get Comfortis to kill all the huge adult fleas on him as we think flea allergy is very possible, skin scrape is done-yeast and bacteria, ears are swabbed, severe bacteria, yeast and "gunk", worms (thank goodness no HW).  He did a full month of Cephlaxin in hopes of helping all the infection he had going on, I washed his ears twice a day with Malaseb flush, bathed twice a week with Malaseb shampoo, he still had many sores (some really deep, all oozing) but we got some food and pedialite in him and he seemed to perk up a bit.  Slowly the sores healed, with the help of a few more rounds of anitibiotics and hours a day of care and cleaning.  I could not deal with the thought of shaving around the sores....he already looked so bad and I just couldn't do it.  I've tried Apple Cider Vinegar, Peroxide, alcohol, cream for yeast infections in women....it goes on and on.  We had him on RAW and a little kibble, now he is on raw, vitamin E, Ester-C, Fish Oil, and prescription strength Benedryl from his vet, am adding Show Stopper as soon as it gets here and might try Dinovite.  He still has some sores, only one that's not improving at all.  I finally shaved that one as a last resort.  It had been looking better for two days, but as I felt it when I cleaned it a few minutes ago, there was a thick coating of the ooze that is coming from the sore. I am ready to scream.  My poor dog is infested with yeast.  I even have to use ointment on his lips where he gets yeast infections.  The main area is affected is his back and tail....almost like you'd expect of fleas but he's on Comfortis AND Frontline and I'm seeing no sign of a flea. Before the shaving I did try Blue Lotion on him two days with no results (you know, the stuff people used to use in more simple times) and frankly, I was very unhappy to learn that blue lotion will not wash off your skin.  Oh yeah, he also has a quarter to half dollar size sore on his chin.  My vision sucks, but sense of smell is awesome and he's getting that "yeasty" smell.  I don't want him on more antibiotics, I don't want him getting worse, I want help.  I've read some pages and they just didn't get through to me or were just trying to sell a product.  Dinovite can't even guarentee me that it will clear the yeast infections.    Been to a few vets besides my regular vet and all prescribe antibiotic, sulfur drug, and/or steroids. How do you kill yeast?  What makes it die?  Are there vitamins I can give him to bring balance to the yeast?  I saw some AVO Yeast in WalMart and it's all natural for yeast infections in women, might this work?  Any ideas?  We've tried everything.  Vet is baffled.  Vet is convinced it's an allergy but we have him practically living in a bubble and constantly cleaning him...if we don't clean him, the sores gunk up.  I heard some mention of B vitamin shots for his skin or for his stomach (we have his stomach under control on Tylan no

Try using Pure Essence Labs Candex for yeast give 1 capsule, and also the dog is going to need probiotics or acidopholis I would recommend Nature Most Laboratories Acidopholis powder. Hope this helps

When your derm. vet did a skin biopsy did it only show that there was just yeast. You said it got better with antib. and steroids.

Always,

Has his immune system been checked (why is he not healing up if you've remedied the culprit causing his problems)? He could have a very weak one (inherited, or induced over a period of time due to conditions he was in prior to arriving with you in August), thus making him more susceptible to such issues and making them almost endless to straighten up. Maybe a different antibiotic would be more effective than Ceph if he's been on it a while.

Is his pancreas working properly & producing adequate insulin? Diabetic people often don't heal sores up properly or quick. I'm just wondering this due to how you say he doesn't seem to heal fast, and SOMEthing is really taxing his white blood cell count if he's oozing and has been for a while. Are you 100% sure of what kind of conditions he was kept in (were they sanitary) prior to getting him?

Antibiotics will actually kill useful organisms in the body hence cause women to get vaginal yeast infections if they're on strong antibiotics a long time. Could this maybe be part of what is prolonging his issue?

Has your vet done any steriod injections to see if it helps? If its an overtaxed immune system, steroid injections will help such, but I'm not sure long-term effects of such.

I'm not familiar with the story on this dog, so I will assume he didn't get this way overnight. Was he perfectly normal until he got put into this situation, or has he always had issues?

Just trying to think out loud and maybe give you some ideas to consider andmaybe pursue. I'm very sorry to hear about your boy's situation and hope you can get it solved for him. Good luck!

Good morning,This is sad to hear that a dog has been made to suffer like this.As far as the yeast goes, there is something the vets use but i dont have the name.First, are you sure that you are feeding a protein source that this dog is ok with? What i mean is ,a lot of dogs are allergic to chicken so feeding raw chicken would not help since he is allergic to that if he is of course.I know its fraustrating but you need to try somethings he has not had before just to rule that out. There is a product i use here in Canada called Probiavi that is great. It is a high strength probiotic.I think that he should have probiotics but the only thing is that some dogs react to that as well IF there is allergies going on.There is a site that has products and a lot of info on yeast.I beleive the name is N'ZYMES,if you google that it will bring you to the site or try the great dane lady site. Are you smelling the yeast from the ears OR from the body?

You will never eliminate yeast from the surface of the skin, as you will never eliminate bacteria from the surface of the skin. Both are there naturally, and coexist in a sort of balance where they and the boy's immune system keep each other in check.

A problem can occur when a dog's immune system is severely compromised by injury, illness, stress, diet, and/or genetic predisposition towards a weak immune system. At this end one (1) type of microorganism can prevail over the other, and a dog can incur an acute condition that can become a chronic condition.

You must determine the root cause of the yeast infestation. The continued use of antibiotics will destroy bacteria (including useful bacteria) and allow yeast to multiply, and the use of antifungal agents will destroy yeast and allow bacteria to multiply.

Best Regards,
Bob-O

Im pretty sure yeast is not cured with antibiotics..Diflucan  is a prescribed medication for yeast in women.. I once worked for a male doctor that would take samples of it home and he used it for toenail fungus.  Its worth a try.
You can also try lotrimin cream... but that takes much longer  then taking the Diflucan.

Rugers Guru

NWilz,
My ruger was smelling "yeasty" a few weeks ago, and had the comon "black belly" from yeast. He was due for his rabies, so when I took him in, I had our vet look at his skin, he had a mild yeast infection. The culprit was his food, because I switched from raw, to kibble.... I moved receintly and it is allot farther from my butcher than I could afford, so I got a big bag of GOOD kibble and started the transition. Needless to say, he got 2 ear infections that I cleared up with Otomax, and this horrid smell from the yeast. I have him on Ketoconazole 200 mg. 1- 1/2 pills a day. I wanted to get it from the inside and the out side, so I opted to get the wash as well. It i called KetoChlor shampoo. Please ask your vet about these! I have had GREAT success in just two weeks! NO SMELL, NO ITCHING. Hey and the little bit of hair missing is starting to come back.
Good luck, and keep us updated
P.S. I am now getting a better brand of kibble, until I can find a local butcher.
