Franki

by Franki on 12 March 2009 - 18:03

I'm looking for some information please.

I have a dog that was purchased as a ppd for myself.
Now after doing some reading and learning I'm interested in doing Schutzhund work with him.
He has his BH.
My question is .. will it cause him some problem(s) to do Schutzhund?
In other words would he then start looking for a sleeve if it was a bad guy?

Apologies, new here, new to GSD's.

Thanks for any help.

Well Schutzhund is a sport, the sleeve present as a reward not  a bad guy, If you really want to star right, look for a german trainer, they know what they are doing!! and not waste your time.

Thanks for the reply, I'm in the Cleveland,Ohio area. Do you know of anyone.
I have contacted OG Buckeye and I'm making plans to take him out there.
Good idea? Bad idea?

I would recommend that you do lots of reading about the sports and about well know german trainer such as Berhard Flinks etc.. then with that in your thought you can cross check while you visit. Test it out, see if they are consistent with what they do, you will find out what do they know and if they are good. That is all I can say. Thanks for reading

Hi Franki, my Astra was a PPD and she did very well in Schutzhund. She was older when she started Schutzhund. She really loved the game. It put better control on her. Yes she would have taken a real bit but she knew the difference.
Always,

Franki:

It doesnt take a german trainer to tell you you can cross train any animal just understand your goals and do your homework and have fun.

Find a "good" trainer regardless of where they come from.  Jesus, as if being born in Germany makes you better at anything, even training dogs!

I agree with Bob, do your homework and weened out bad trainer

LOL @ 4pack

Dito to Bob and 4 pack. Check out some clubs and see who you get along with. Then join the one that is best suited for you. Scutzhund USA has a club list on their site- you can see what clubs are in your area.

Frank, sounds like you got some good advice. I have a schutzhund (sport dog) and a K9 (real life working or non-sport dog). There are two different mindsets with these training styles. Sport and K9 have completely different end ideals and you should looking into what your end ideal is for your dog. Both are extremely rewarding and I am glad I got to do both of them.
