It's nearly summer and since I'm in Texas it means it will get pretty hot.  I don't know if I should get my dog shaved or if I should just take a shedding rake to her every few days.  Thoughts?

Never shave a dog! The coat provides insulation in both hot and cold weather. Keep her groomed (she should shed most or all of her undercoat ) provide plenty of fresh drinking water, and if she is outside she must have access to shade. I live in Colorado, and while we don't get much in the way of humidity it can get very hot here too..... my guys have a kiddie pool which they really like - they will jump in and out, and sometimes just soak in it . It's an inexpensive purchase and well worth it! I also have a dog door - so they can be in or out as they choose.

What are you thinking? Have you ever had a GSD before? OR a dog?

We used to shave a mixed breed dog when I was a kid, she looked like a lion with a puff of fur at the end of her tail and an unshaven face.   I can't say it helped her stay cool, thats not how it works.

Don't shave, use that shedding blade or a rake to get all the loose hair out.

WE just let the hair pile up on the rug, then the wife spins it and makes rugs.

No shaving!! Dogs have coats for a reason.. its not only thermal in the winter but also protection from the sun in the hotter months....
Provide adequate shade and shelter for any season and plenty of water....
Was a groomer for many years... surprising how many people think shaving the dog will stop shedding!! ridiculous!!
