I was looking through the O.F.A. website and found the info below. Do you think it is correct for the O.F.A. to post that SV fast normal is borderline HD and that Noch Zugelassen is mild HD? I guess that means Germany is breeding a lot of borderline and mild HD dogs. Some of the top studs are fast normal. I personally do not agree as I have seen fast normal hips on x-ray and my vet, that has done a lot of hips, thought they would go O.F.A. Good. Any comments?

I've done both on my current dogs.....

This is my male, he was "a" normal at 12 months (I don't have the xray sorry) and OFA fair at 6 years of age. People have said they thought he should have been OFA good.

This is my female, she too was "a" normal at 12 months (don't have the xray, but looked very similiar to this one). And OFA excellent at 2 1/2. So in my dogs' cases I got to see that an "a" normal hip could range from OFA Fair to OFA Excellent. Things can be quite subjective with OFA I believe. Regardless, either dog is not dysplastic.

"Fast normal", is just that, meaning "almost normal". Radiographically, there are very, very minor differences between the SV top grade and fast normal. It is incorrect that OFA notes it as "borderline HD". It is too bad that such certifying agencies cannot get together with excellent translators and work out a common system that has meaning for all across all borders.

I have seen several Fast Normal dogs go OFA good.

Ofa uses opinions from who knows ?The SV uses one vet who is a Orthopedic specialist on hips and is 80 years of age and all this man does is grade hips for the SV. The SV uses the Norberg Angle to grade hips. The SV uses a different vet who is a elbow specialist to grade elbows. This is why I use the SV over OFA.

It is as B Andersen says
The SV has one person for grading hips,and a different person to grade the Elbows
Both my Dogs were graded by the SV both A Normal
Fast Normal is border line A,
Plus who first bought in the Gradings of the Hips and elbows, It should be really the body who first thought of the gradings as correct, for if this is not so then anything can go on,
If another Body grades at all it should be based on the crtira of the ones who first thought of it

I have to agree to with Steve and B. Anderson....

I kinda feel like OK, how long has this guy been looking at GSD hips?

Vs. how many different people that you might get through the OFA?

OFA looks at the X-Rays regarding of the breed..They do know Airedale terrier don't have the same HIP that German Shepherd..Age is not a factor..you are dysplastic or you are not..and it is 3 orthopedics doctors that looks the X-rays..not one.

I would trust the OFA far more than the SV Stamps and they certified too early anyway( 1 year)...and yes you are right..germans have been breeding not so god hip for a very long time!!

AND CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT A ALMOST NORMAL HIP ARE?? I JUST DON'T GET THAT ONE! AND IF IT'S REALLY WHAT THEY MEAN..I WOULDN'T TOUCH THIS DOG IN MY BREEDING PROGRAM WITH A 100 FOOT POLE!

I had my dogs A stamped at 2 years of age. It is a translation issue not a hip issue in the wording Normal and Fast Normal. I would still trust the SV vets over OFA at at one year of age. I will never use OFA again any vet can read xrays for OFA.
