M Zak...

So you're telling me there's no such thing as a black/red GSD?

by SitasMom on 04 March 2009 - 22:03

So red is just a really really dark tan?

Technically, no, there is no Black & Red gene in the sense of the genetic distinction between B&T, Bi, and Black. "Red" is just a darker shade of tan.

OK.  I'm starting to get it, I think.  Red is just a deeper shade of tan.  So is there also a difference between tan and blonde?  My husband keeps correcting me when I say black and tan....he insists it's black/blonde.   What's the deal???!!

According to genetics no blk/red. According to registry and  for identification you  try to elaborate and pick a color  and pattern most suited to the dog for that breed. There is no deal.. its not a big deal honest :) and guess what the pigment from pup to adult can change too so  ????

Funny but AKC has a choice on the reg app and BLACK/RED one choice

In Belguim the dark red is called red and Black is the other choice of sadle and rest of dog..

My male gsd is not black and tan or blonde,,,he is red as Oklahoma red dirt and copper...
He is black and red.

Thank you Yellowrose!  I pulled out the app and you're 100% right!  AND there is no black/blonde.  I showed it to my husband...end of discussion!  I hope!

I do agree with you again about the red OK dirt/copper description too.  We had a gentleman here the other day who described our dogs color as a red mahogany!  Funny how different people see the same thing and call it by another name!

From now on I shall describe our dogs red color as you have....Red as the Oklahoma dirt with a touch of copper!
