My 12 month old  GSD female is in heat for the first time.  I have never had a female, always males.  I have been keeping her locked up for sometime now.  I am told by a friend that right now is the most critical time to make sure she is locked up.

Problem is, I have a male dachsund that is driving me crazy.  He is fixed.  I paid for it myself.  Last night, I had them both in the house.  She had a diaper on.  They both came up missing for just a minute and I found them both up stairs - him doing his thing.  Not locked mine you, diaper still on - just pulled back a little - I didn't catch them in the act.  When I came in - he stopped.

My question is - has anybody ever heard of a dog being nuetered that maybe it didn't take.  I don't know if he got her - but oh my gosh - what if they didn't clipped that little weiny dog... Another friend, that works at a vet, says you cant really mess up a nuetor - ---

Comments please....

Castration would certainly be hard to mess up. How old is your dachshund and what age was he done, some dogs still have the drive but not the necessary bits. Probably best to separate them for a little while to stop him annoying her.
I can't even imagine a Dachshund being able to reach her anyway.

He is over 2 yrs of age. I had him fix several of months ago.   Funny - guys at my schutzhund club got into a heated debate on if she would lay down for the weiny dog.  He is a mini and the answer is she will - he cant reach her standing up - but when she is in a platz - she is reachable.

I have kept them seperated for several weeks -because he has been annoying- but I guess she smells sweet to him right now - and he is a quick little man.

I had a client in the other day, they had had their schnauzer fixed 4 months ago at the most expensive vet in town. heh Dog was a cryptocoird ,<sp> and the vet didnt remove the testicle that remained in the abdomen. From what the clients said, the schnauzer fathered a litter of 2 sch/poodle pups. They are doing DNA to confirm the father of the pups, I think they intend to sue.

Anything is possible I suppose, but a neuter is such a common procedure I would think it would be hard to screw it up...... it does take the hormones a while to leave the body completely however. I have heard of neutered dogs trying to tie a female, I don't think it's that uncommon. Just keep them apart until your girl is through her heat.  And if you don't want to be annoyed in the future (and not by just your dog) get her spayed....

I had a Dobe that would go to town with my females even though he had been neutered (too) young.  There was never a "tie" but he certainly gave it the old college try!

My male GSD was neutered 2 years ago, at age 5. Perhaps because he was done so late in life, he still acts like an un-neutered male. Okay, I don't get the howling, or the going off his food, but when my bitch is in season, he will not leave her alone, and is fully capable of tieing with her when she's in standing heat! This isn't very common, but I HAVE heard of it happening with other neutered males.

The only other explanation I can think of is that your guy was a cryptorchid, and they only got the one nut. Are you sure he had both testicles fully descended, before being neutered?  At any rate, keep them apart, as the male can hurt himself. I asked a breeder about just letting they go at each other, and scratch their itches, as I knew no babies would result. She said it's possible for the dog to get hurt if the bitch panics while in a tie. (He can break the bone in his penis, if she gets too athletic....)

(Pictures the guys reading this crossing their legs right about now...)

yes -he has had a few in his time.  I have nothing but females on my street and the owners are careless and let them run loose while in heat.  I don't let him run loose - but he would escape when the door opened and I would try to run them down in the neighborhood.  Little german men - sure can run fast...

Yes a neuter can be messed up, however I had a neutered male that tied with my older female.   This was 11 years ago or so, and didn't think that was possible.  Now I know!

I remember calling the vet and asking if you got em both.....

In his case both testicles were dropped and he was neutered at 6 months.  So he still just had a lot of libido!  But was sneaky about it.

I'd be mad about the vet missing the retained testicle!

He didn't howl or anything, but when I wasn't looking he'd be thinking about it.  Found them literally hiding behind the garage one day.  LIke a couple of horny teenagers!   So, needless to say had to keep an eye on them.

He was also a way worse leg lifter than my current intact male.
