Hi,
Ime after a little friendly advice,
I own and train a 2 year old GSD bitch, she is on the ,pdb. name Ramson Zillah,
when she was born and up untill recently her color was black and tan, over the last few weeks
she has began to moult, her black blanket back is now dissapearing and becoming a silver sable color.
is this common ? or unusual ?
Also I am at present looking for a suitable stud dog,one of the two that I like is a very dark sable almost black with a
gold tinge to its color, from DDR lines,Dingo v muldenschlosschen, pdb.I am not breeding for a certain color but because I like the male and what he offers
to compliment my bitch, health and temperament are my priority closly followed by working ability ,but I am curious as to what might this proposed mating produce regarding color,
As I know absoluteley diddley squat about genetics and what color dog put to a certain color bitch will produce,I am after some answers from the knowledgable ones.
,but only out of curiosity.
Many ,many thanks.

Are you talking about a bitch stripe on back or complete saddle change, Its better to show a picture to get the best advise.

Perhaps your bitch is a sable with a saddle? I'm guessing with Dingo v muldenschlosschen you'd get sable puppies.

Has your food changed at all? I had a half show line bitch whose saddle completely disappeared, when Precise changed their formulation many years ago. She was a great-gr daughter of Uran on the sire's side.. I asked breeders about it at the time and each show breeder told me Uran was known for producing a fading and/or girzzled saddle in the bitches. One finally asked, "You're feeding Precise, aren't you?" I changed the food and her saddle reappeared and never sent missing again.

interesting - never heard of a food-related coat change other than poor to good or vice-versa.

Assuming Zillah is a black & tan, which she probably is from your description and the DB photo, mated to Dingo, a black sable, the probability is that each pup born will have a 50:50 chance of B&T:sable.
Dogs of the black sable pattern do tend to carry recessive black and this is probably the case with Dingo. Also Zillah has at least a 25% chance of carrying rec black from her sire line. If they do both carry then the probability ratio is then 2:1:1 sable:B&T:black.
IOW each pup born has 50% chance of sable, 25% B&T and 25% black.
If Dingo happens to be homozygous sable, then only sable is possible (except for non standard colours).

Precise was a premium kibble (not sure if it's made anymore) that changed its formulation. As a result, yes, the coat changed--saddle disappeared. The bitch looked like a defective Golden Retriever.
I cannot recall wheher the food I immediately switched to at that time was Canidae, or not, but I think it was. At any rate, it was another premium kibble and the problem was corrected.

Hi
When born she was black and tan,at approx 9 months she developed a sable "stripe" along her topline
but no more than 2" (50 cm) wide,
at her next moult this stripe widened to approx 4" (100cm)
Now she has just finished her 3rd moult and the whole blanket has sable running through it,
from a distance the blanket looks black, but from 12 feet (3mtre) away the sable is clearly seen coming through,
I personally love the look of her,but had not heard or seen this before,
Her food has never changed she has always loved it so never needed to change it.
Many thanks for all your comments.

A rough rule is female black and golds get lighter with every malt to some degree while males get darker. It is very unlikely that a bitch will keep a black saddle it almost always breaks down their back.
Mated to a sable male you will most likely get some sables and some black and golds, however you may get all black and gold or all sable.
