What is the least expensive way to rid a dog of fleas and ticks. Is there a livestock answer, like with Ivermectrin?

by SitasMom on 02 March 2009 - 01:03

I was hoping for a cattle or sheep flea drop product that could cut costs, guess it doesn't exist.......

This is the cheapest place to buy Frontline and Heartguard and those types of products.  NO PRESCRIPTION.  Flat rate for shipping.

I bought a house last year in Jan and in the spring I was overrun with fleas.  I have never had a flea problem before, but there were lots of stray cats living under my house,  so I bought 3 flea bombs and set them off under my house,  and treated the whole yard with a granulated stuff I found at walmart in the garden section.  Bathed all the dogs and cats and treated everyone with Frontline.

I purchased the largest size frontline and divided it up by weigh of my dogs.  My Vet said that the formula is the same but you use more or less depending on the weight.  I put put the product into a small syringe and used what I needed for each size.

up to 22lbs is .67ml
23-44lbs is 1.34ml
45-88lbs is 2.68ml

That was the most cost effective way for me.

Good luck.

Nothing but Frontline Plus or Advantage in Texas

The rest are a waste of Money

Plus keep your yard mowed and clean and every year do a Specticide Overspray to make sure all bugs and insects are deleted from trees ,bushes and foundation of your home..Along with that yard yearly attention the fleas are also taken down.

Off topic:
Do Frontline (and Biospot etc..) really continue to work if your dog swims a lot? I ask because I take my dog swimming 2 or 3 times a week in the summer and I always feel like I'm wasting $$$ because the flea/tick treatments must get washed off. What do you guys think?

by SitasMom on 02 March 2009 - 02:03

if you wait 48 hours Frontline will still be effective. it has to have time to absorb into the dog......

by Luvmidog on 02 March 2009 - 03:03

Frontline plus is used for that reason.  But you have to wait 24 hrs after bath and 24  before go swimming

Garlic on the food helps also repel.  I also keep a bottle of Adams Flea spray,   water base in my truck for days when I might encounter some mosquitos or see a flea that I acquired at the farm.  Just give a mist on the ears and around the back end and down tail.
