Just wondering what everyone's opnions are as to at what age a black and red dog's final colouring can be established.  Do some lighten until 12 months for example and then stop or do they all mostly continue to lighten until maturity, albeit at different rates?  All my black and reds have continued to gain more red hair until they have become mature.

My bitch has a small amount of light coloured hair on her back and is 12 months old.  Her litter sister started off with more black pigment and has increased her amount of red but at a much slower rate than my girl.  Their dam has a light mask and light hair through her back although does retain a black saddle either side of this, their sire is all black.  They are both very rich in their red pigment.

I hope this all makes sense.

I'd have to say it is a continual thing. My dog is getting "tanner" all the time! He's losing the blanket in favor of a proper saddle. I still wonder what he's going to look like when he grows up! LOL

the breeder of Sita said that with his bloodlines, they will lighten for about 3 years and then pretty much stay.

it just might depend on bloodlines.

At 6 and 7 my dogs are still changing, of course not as drastically, but I still see changes in them.
