Hi everyone, I am also thinking of switching to raw. My pup is 11months today and she weighs 49lbs she is a german shepherd mix dog with possible grain allergies.

I currently switched from royal canin large breed puppy to Orijen 6 fresh fish. My pup loves the orijen so much that if i even walk near the bag she sits by my foot and follows me around the house thinking i have food in my hands..lol. which is a better response than with RC I use to have to trick her into eating that food. but anyways I am currently giving her Orijen twice daily but just recently got some raw pattys from my dog food store and gave her some last night instead of the kibble (about 12-14 hrs after her kibble  breakfast).

I want to do kibble in the morning and raw in the afternoon but noticed last night that she had really bad diarreah about 4hrs after eating the pattys. Should I stop feeding her the pattys or should I work it in like 2 times a week for 2 weeks, and then slowly increase the amount of days until she gets better?

I would ask my vet but he is anti-raw food so any help from here would be great.

I don't usually take much time when introducing raw.. i just do it!! You may want to try some probiotics with her, feed a little less than what you did.. not sure how big the patties are..
Try Activia with the food and after..... what is the ratio of bones/meat/ veggies and organs in the patties?/ It's important the balance be eventually correct.....
Check out Dr Ian Billinghurst, creator fo the BARF diet... he should ehlp a lot.. has a website and sort of a FAQ type of book that is totally worth the $17
Good luck......

The BARF diet is seriously outdated. Go to the Yahoo group rawfeeding to get all the info you need.

I just joined that Yahoo group.  Lots of good info.

Does anyone know if maybe a little plain yogurt would help with the diarrhea?

by VomMarischal on 01 March 2009 - 18:03

No it won't. More bone content will. Also, alternating commercial food with raw is a very bad idea. That's what is causing the problem.

A small amount of pumpkin can help with diarrhea. Paradoxically, too much can give your dog the runs because it is high in fiber, but a small amount will help to slow down the food passing through the gut. Another good remedy is Slippery Elm - you can buy the capsules at any Vitamin Cottage, Whole Foods etc.

thanks all for the quick responses.

in regards to the following:
***what is the ratio of bones/meat/ veggies and organs in the patties?

I have no clue....its not on the bag so I am attaching the link for the site. Its called natures variety frozen dog food http://www.naturesvariety.com/raw_products_chicken

***why am i feeding kibble and raw??
because I am still doing research about raw food and I wish to slowly do the transition. I am a veg. so its hard for me to bring meat into my house so i am slowly bringing in little by little until i get comfy with the idea. I read that as long as they are not feed kibble and raw in the same serving it is fine just space the meals 12 hrs apart.

I have one more question:
Should i feed her raw everynight while I make the transition or just a couple nights a week??

Just a few random thoughts:

Is chicken a new protein for your dog, or is the kibble also chicken?

Could it be a coincidence..  did he have anything else earlier that day, or too much exercise?

How much did you feed raw;  often raw meals are MUCH less than a kibble meal in volume..

And I 'would' do a bit of yogurt and a bit of pumkin too.   Yogurt or kefir can help introduce more digestive cultures into the system if the body isn't used to producing the right amount to process raw food.

If you are going to do it,  I would do it every night.   Too many days of kibble only and I think you'll see the body again not producing enough of the right enzymes and intestinal cultures, if  that is what is going on.  Daily raw meals should help her digestive system balance it.

I'm a veg too. As far as I'm concerned, all meat is dogfood.
Don't make your transition slowly. JUST DO IT. Just switch her overnight.

Her kibble is all fish kibble. She didnt get into anything unusual or play to much, I think she might be sick from earlier this week (she got into somethings poo, didnt eat it just put it in her mouth and she swallowed part of a stuffed animal from the dog park, luckily she threw it up 2 days later).

We are going to the vet in the morning to check for worms and other possible things. I am going to do the yogurt/ kefir thing until she gets better and then put her back on raw dinner. I tried to give her some patty tonight and she wouldnt eat it so i kind of pushed some in her mouth (out of frustration) and about 2hrs later she had diarrhea again (it was solid after her kibble breakfast). So I think maybe the pattys are not working for her?? her old kibble was chicken so she should be use to chicken right?? Maybe I should try real chicken instead of patty chicken.
