Ok, after my last experience with not getting my papers on a dog, I did learn.  So I just bought a Czech imported male.  Keep in mind I've never had papers on any of my dogs.  I have his "pink papers" (export pedigree it says).  How do I register him in my name with the Czech registry?  He's already AKC, but his tattoo leads back to the Czech registration and should he and I become separated, I want that tattoo to point to me.    It has the previous owners name and signature.  Do I just write in my name and all below that and send them money and it's that's easy?  If so, how much money?  I can't read a word on the pedigree so I'm lost.  Do I have to send in his Original pink papers or will a high quality color copy work? Also, he's had DNA and OFA done on hips and elbow....can I get a copy of the OFA certificates with my name on them?  Can I have the DNA switched over to my name? Also, do I have to send in the original AKC transfer paper or will a high qualty color copy work? I'm totally lost.  Any help appreciated. Thanks so much, Nichole

You say the dog is already AKC registered. Do you have the registration from AKC now in your name? You are not clear here about what you do and do not have. You do not need Czech registration ownership change.

All that matters now is that you say you already have the AKC papers. Do you have an AKC Registration paper in your name?, or just the transfer paper that has not been sent in?

None of the other stuff, especially the Czech stuff really needs to be switched to your name unless you want to jump through all the hoops to do so. Write OFA sending a copy of the AKC registration that shows you are the owner and ask them to change their records. Who did the DNA? AKC....same thing...prove to them you are the new owner and you can get it changed. If you really want to change the Czech paperwork, send them a simple letter asking them how much it is to change. They too will require proof, but again, I would not bother. All one needs is the paperwork to begin with and in this case, the AKC paperwork to be complete. If you have NOT really transferred the dog from the previous AKC owner to you, then that is an issue you can correct.

Nicole,

I would have the person that you worked with and bought the dogs through help you with that.  Whether it was an importer or the dogs' owner in Czech.

You can register tattoos and microchips with the AKC's Companion Animal Recovery program seperately from the registry itself for about $12. Go to AKC.org.

And do get him 'chipped, how many threads do we see here trying to identify a tattoo? Lots of shelters, vets, & pounds do not know how to trace a tattoo, or even to look for one. If your dog were lost, would anyone know that he's imported, & that he's Czech? Probably not. Better to microchip & pay for a life long registration with a locater service, & keep your info up to date! jh

I agree with chipping. However, I strongly suggest if anyone has a microchipped dog that they call the registry and ask them what information they have recorded. I did this about 1 year ago and found that more than 1/2 of all the dogs I had chipped were registered with incorrect information, or I owned dogs I did not own, or dogs I owned were not in my name. I think they must not have very good quality control or illiterate people doing data entry. Check it out!!!

Shelley, thanks for the tip!  I will definitely take part in that.
Hodie, I have the transfew paper for the AKC.  I just got him so have been busy with getting him adjusted here and now I've finally sat down to take care of paper work.  I might eventually do the Czech registry thing, but it sounds like it's probably not worth the effort.  His DNA is AKC so that and the OFA should consume enough time getting them changed over.

And Hodie, thanks for the great advice about chips.  I hope I never need mine, but in the event I do, I will check and make sure they have my info correct.  Is any certain brand better than others?

Thanks,

Nichole
