We have a person that came back to us saying they have a dog now that was sold to them. The dog matches a dog we've sold before (tattoo and microchip match). They have no bill of sale or anything.
The original person we sold the dog as a puppy to never picked up the AKC papers. The new person would like us to give them the AKC papers. What i've told them so far is I need some form of bill of sale or transfer from the original owner (appearently she gave the dog to one person and that person sold it to this new one, but no paperwork trail) so that we would have permission to give the AKC papers to this person. We don't want the original person coming back saying we didn't have permission to give the AKC papers to them etc. The problem is no one can get ahold of the original buyer from us. What would you do in this case? We were thinking what if the original owner sold this dog on the premiss that there were no AKC papers for them, then it wouldn't be right for us to provide the papers.

They took the dog without papers, why do they need them so badly now? I would not supply them with the paperwork.

the person who finally gave this dog up to the person that contacted you had the dog on CL and on kijiji several times, but would flake out and disappear when people inquired about the dog.
the dog has a good home now and will not be bounced around, so why not give over her AKC papers? you agreed to lift limited reg. off the papers after OFA's are done, and to give papers to the new owner for a fee. now you are going back and questioning whether or not you want to hand over papers.
If the person you sold the dog too even cared about the dog or wanted its papers, they would have picked them up from you and they would have never gotten rid of the dog.
you have a chance to make things right with this dog, she is in a good home, gets excellent food and care, will be worked and titled. whats the problem?

...did I ever tell you about the burglary at my home, where one of the things taken was my spayed Am line gsd's registration? I notified AKC and sent proof of spaying and the police report by certified mail, to prevent any fraudulent litter being registered. Guess what? AKC registered three litters to that bitch, including one three years later, months after she was dead!! When I tried to get them to investigate and asked who registered those litters, I was told that they could only discuss that bitch's litters with the registered owner... which wasn't me!!

Gerdeshaus has papers on this dog, not the original owner.
I believe this dog was returned to gerdeshaus by the original owner, gerdeshaus RESOLD the dog, and THAT OWNER never took the paperwork. this owner then turned around and gave the dog to someone else.
the dog has matching tattoo's and micorchip # to the dog gerdeshaus sold.

Why not?
A gift is a gift. What's it to them? They didn't want her.
It's not like they withheld the papers not wanting the dog to be bred - they never bothered to pick up the papers in the first place, so it wasn't even an option for them to provide papers. And unpapered, the dog wouldn't sell for much anyway so they gave her away.
Poor thing. All those homes.
I agree that OP shouldn't hand over the papers until the original buyer is contacted. Read enough on here about stolen dogs to know that (unless OP knows the new owners personally) it wouldn't be a bad idea to check out their story and make sure they were given the dog. It's a hassle for the current owners, but if they really want this dog they'll do the legwork.
You bred her, what do you think? If you think she should be out in the world w/o papers, then don't hand them over. I'd think it was YOUR decision as to whether to withhold them or not, now.
If the new people meet your approval and can show they've made a legitimate effort to track down the first purchaser without success (posting on msg. boards, registered letters, ads in the paper where original owner lives, etc.) I don't think you can be blamed if you sign them over.
