I have never had a GSD with HD but have a concern on my 10 year old girl. She was OFA good and very high drive all her life. Noticed yesterday that while chasing her ball that when she picked it up and whirled around that she is favoring her right hind leg , it sort of gives and she favors it for just a second then runs back. She also stopped after a few runs and usually she never tired out. Did same thing today.
Could this be a first sign of HD?

Truth is, nobody will ever be able to say what she has without an x-ray, but she's 10 and that's a pretty advanced age for a GSD. It might not necessarily be an HD, they get arthritis and all kinds of age-related ills and pains, just as we do. From the way you describe her leg 'giving out' during a rotating motion it sounds like she could have a damaged ACL (maybe torn or partially torn). If that is the case, your vet might give you some pain or anti-inflammatory meds to manage her discomfort and show you a few strengthening exercises you can do with her. I'm sure most people here would advise you to go to the vet, and that's what you should ultimately do.

It could be a pulled muscle as well.. Just take her in and have it check.. that way you know exactly what is going on Good luck

The best thing to start with is to let her take it steady from now on,
no twisting or turning let her go on at her own pace untill she has been checked out by the vet
He will probably stretch her legs at different areas to test her first before xrays to see if the dog shows signs of discomfort, plus he will watch her walking and running on leash
I hope it is only a pulled Muscle

Take her to a vet BEFORE whatever has a chance to mend on its own.

You really need to know what going on.

My dad's shoulder was bothering him, the doctor sent him to physical therapy for 6 months. It wasn't getting any better, so he went again to the doctor. This time x-rays and ultrasounds were done. The tests showed the ligament  issue and had 6 months to "mend its self". Bad news, dad ended up having rather major shoulder surgery and 9 additional months of very painful P.T. Good news is his bad shoulder is now his good shoulder.

My point being - had the doctor done the x-rays and ultrasound first, my dad's surgery, pain and recovery time would have been greatly reduced........

I just love socialized medicine!
