Just found out today that I have a 11 month old pup with severe Hip dysplasia. My Vet recommended FHO or total hip replacement. Would like to hear any opinions on this procedure, from any one who has been thru it. Here is her xray.

I rescued a husky who had this procedure.  I actually picked her up at the middle of the road where she had been ran over.  her right hip was dislocated badly and the vet did this procedure.  the problem I had was her hip didn't remain in place and kept popping out.

I would never let a vet do this procedure on one of my dogs again.

As sad as it is to have a dog whos going to have life long problems .
Its worst to put an animal thru so much.    And to what end?
At what expense?
First get a second opinion please.
Then consider the animal.   Not yourself, but he animal.
Breaks my heart.

I am considering all options, including putting her down.

I'm sorry your even in that position.
Definately let someone else look at the dog.

Do the right thing for the Dog, not think of your own feelings, that is totally wrong thing todo
Look ahead and think how will the dog live a good life,
It cannot live a good life so be Kind and let it go

Please have an expert x-ray and comment.  There's more than one Vet that's got it wrong.  Some seriously dysplastic dogs live pretty normal lives.

I'm sorry for you and your puppy.

I have got a young dog who at the age of 18 months dislocated his hip after running at speed and slipping on muddy ground. We took him to our vet who tried without success to put the hip back in its socket but it kept popping out again due to the damage to the joint and so he referred us to Cambridge Vet School. Cambridge gave us the option of either the femoral head excision or total hip replacement. The total hip replacement would have cost close to £5000 and the dog would have been confined for several months plus the specialist told us that about 1 in 10 do not work. We decided the costs versus the risk were to high and so we decided to go for the femoral head excision. The costs are lower, about £1500, and the dog was back home within 48 hours and walking pain free, although obviously with a limp. This operation was carried out in December and only two months later the dog is leading a normal life with no complications. It is important to build up the muscle around the joint to do the job of the hip joint and so he gets both walking on lead and free runnning. This morning he has been for a mile walk which includes jumping over a small ditch.

Based on my experience I have no hesitation in recommending that you go for the femoral head excision.

All the best
Steve
