How normal is it for a breeder to vaccinate a puppy right before it leaves for a several hour drive to go to its new home? I know of someone who this has happened to recently so I am curious how many breeders do this. Actually the puppy(8-12 weeks old) was vaccinated less than one hour before the ride home. The breeder did not inform this person about any possible allergic reactions to getting vaccinated or about any sign that may indicate such a reaction. I was informed that this was the puppys very first combo puppy vaccination. All is well and the pup had no reactions but this person was told by someone that it could have turned into a bad situation. What would be considered a good amount of time to wait after vaccnating a young puppy before it goes on a road trip or gets shipped via airplane? I posted this here because I am a member but I am thinking that this information can be used when purchasing any breed of puppy and I appreciate any replies! As always, anyone can pm me if you dont want to respond publically. Thanks!!

Hi Donna, the fact is, most puppies do just fine with vaccines. But, just in case, I do wait 24 hours after vaccination before shipping, or placement. I think that is prudent. Most reactions will occur within this time period, it just makes sense. VS

I v accinate my puppies a week before they go home which means that I keep them until they are 9 weeks old. I never have vaccine reactions which doesn't mean that I won't down the road but I feel that the stress of going to a new home shouldn't be mixed with the stress of a vaccine which is an assault on the body. Just my personal opinion.
