I am about to send a deposit for a puppy located on the West Coast.  I live in New Jersey and my wife is afraid that our new puppy may have lasting problems from the long flight.   Any input from your experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks
Larry

A very weak puppy might be temporarily upset by it, but even then, it shouldn't have any lasting effects. I have had 4 or 5 shipped, and they are all absolutely fine. They arrive a bit tired, but no worse for the wear. A breeder who says it's too traumatic to ship a puppy is most likely breeding total $h!+.

I think that I would just make the new home thing great , treats, and bonding and quite. You are enough after a flight., and I would just leave it that way for a few days, then start adjusting them to the family  and other animals. It depends on the dogs breeding working, or  pet. Stability comes from breeding and I can tell you GSD are strong and ones who go out of the box are or should be pets.Relax and the dog will too.

Thanks for your advice, I think my wife will feel much better now that you all have had good experiences.

I too have had very good experiences both in flying my own adult dog and in getting pups shipped  from The Netherlands or from the other side of the USA.  They come bouncing out of the crate & ready to go.  With a new pup, I agree 100% with "P" (sorry, I just can't call anyone I don't know "Princess"  )  and heartily suggest holding off letting  your friends and relatives come over to see, pet and play with him until he has had time to acclimate to his new surroundings and begin bonding with his new people.

P.S.  Congratulations on your new pup, I bet you can't wait!

yea, my male was shipped from Germany and came off the plane fine and had a couple of days of shuffling when I got him home too.   No worse for the where, came out of the crate as cool as can be!

Plus, have known several other people who've had pups shipped from far away places.

If it's a stable dog in the first place I don't think there should be any issues!

How old is the puppy?
Yes it is stressful and can be very messy.

My pup was shipped from Germany and came thru it ok, other than being absolutely filthy stinky nasty..LOL

It was a long trip.

Your forced to trust these people and usually you don't have problems, but all it takes is one employee with a bad attitude or no sense to add to your dogs experience in a way you would not care for.

Over great distances you really have no choice but I do not like shipping animals.

All pups I have had shipped to me seemed none the worse for the wear. My youngest, now 2+, came from Germany. About 17 hours in a crate, considering the transport to the airport, then customs. A friend picked her up for me ,as it was a direct flight only, then shipped her the follwing day another hour flight. She came out wanting to check out the room and outside to go pee... I think you should be fine!

Thanks again for providing us with your positive feedback.  The puppy is 9 weeks old.  Very excited.
